Who is the Best in the East?

Strawn's QB did a good job throwing the ball. Nowak played everywhere but SB. He did not throw the ball. It might make the difference. I have seen Strawn scrimmage Zephyr without Nowak, play Leuders with Nowak at SB and to be honest I couldn't tell much difference in their passing game with or without him. Maybe I have blinders on. There was one dropped ball in the May game that could truly be blamed on the cast. In the Leuders game Nowak and the QB split the passing game about 50-50, both hit their target consistantly. If there is a rematch down the road, I have no doubt it will be an epic battle...again.

May lost two starters before we even played water Valley, Throckmorton , Strawn, Gustine, and they continue to get better, and stronger each week. May has only lost 1 time to a D1 school in the last two years, Crowell. Until they get beat they are the beast of the East.

I'm good with that!

If May is the Best in the East, where does that leave Abbott and Calvert? I get it that Calvert is DII and your point was referencing DI schools, but May lost to a really good Calvert team, who was then defeated by a very good Abbott team. I realize it's splitting hairs, but no way to definitively state May as the Best, without recognizing these other two teams as being in the conversation.

That's true...and I think May and Abbott meet again this yr...hopefully with out the ejections...should be an epic game....May really should have beat Calvert but didn't couple lil mistakes makes a huge difference...they learned from that...but no excuses a loss is a loss...be fun to watch Abbott's star offensive player against May's defensive standout...but a lot of football between now and then....good luck to Abbott and all the teams tonight...stay healthy

May turned the ball over 3 times in scoring position against Calvert and held the led until the last minute of the game. If May would have played mistake free football they would have beat Calvert. I did say that they were continuing to get better and stronger each week. As a future coach I will always want my team to improve each and every week like May has done. I understand that Any team can be beat, but I thought from the beginning of the year that May and Abbott would meet up in the semi final. But who ever represents the East will have to go through May, Abbott, Gordon, Strawn, and Blum in no perticular order. I'm a May Tiger so My thoughts may be a little lopsided. We will definately see.

Well after seeing the final score I wonder if there is a moving truck in front of that strawn coaches house this morning?

Christmas must be coming soon cause that's about as nutty as a fruitcake.

Well forgetful one your statement still riles me. Coaches Lee and Pustojovskey have spoiled some of us Strawn fans. We've all seen Friday Night Lights but what you said is beyond ridiculous.
If I counted right in 12 years Coach Lee is 112-38. That averages out to 10-3. Won state 2x, made it there once more, semis once more, qf 3x, bd 3x. I can only think of a couple of teams in the state with a better record in the same time period.
I don't live there anymore but I hope he retires there. At 80.

Everyone who knows football from Gordon understands Coach Lee's record, and the fact that he is a Hall of Famer... but that is also why we are so happy about the future of Coach Kostiha. These two teams seemed really evenly matched coming in, and yes I know if Harry Nowak had a good hand, it would have been a better game.. but you could see different coaching styles on each side.. and in a great game, a 2nd year head coach pulled out the win. I dont see any team with a set of scrubs and a few stars, beating Strawn by any means this year. It takes a Program to beat Strawn. May has a program, and Gordon now clearly has a program for the future.

Wow! my statement stands I saw strawn play earlier this year and I watched Gordon play as well this year . I like MANY others had strawn winning this game . i have heard all the stories of the strawn/Gordon rivalry and I think it is good for the game. But hearing those stories it would make a person think that the townsfolk would "run that coach outta town" so to speak, I guess the stories are a stretching of the truth .

Well from what I understood of Strawn in the 80's and early 90's... the idea of putting For Sale signs in the yard was not a stretch.. Gordon dominated for a while.. then Strawn picked up Coach Lee... so things have changed.

Your statement stand's huh? Well that's just stilly.
Reminds me of a commercial I heard the other day. One fella says I'm gonna enter that website right now, my password is Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Huey, Dewy, Louie. Second guy interrupt's, why is your password so long? First guy, well it's supposed to be 8 characters.
As Goob might say, yew remind me of the first guy.
BTW, as far as the stories about the rivalry, I don't think you've heard them all. I only lived there 8 years but I'd bet I know a couple you don't.

I covered May against Gordon for the broadcast, and if there is currently a better team in the east, they must be really scary. May seems healthy and had everything working like clockwork. Much better then what I saw on film prior to the game.

We can speculate a lot and have fun doing it, but we truly won't know who the beast in the east is until the semifinal game is over. There are so many varibles involved in how good a team looks on the field in a given night, it is hard to speculate from one week to the next. Blocking matchups, defensive formations, defensive positioning within the formation all become a small part in how good a team will look from one week to the next. Scouting and breaking down opposing teams offensive formations and defensive formations from film. Being able to communicate your information to your team and how well your team will adapt to any subtle changes needed on the next weeks game. And last, how well your team is able to make adjustments on the fly during the present game.

Richland Springs faces the same problem each year that the better teams in the state face year after year: if you are a consistent winner, it becomes harder and harder to schedule good, competitive games because people lack faith in their team's ability to compete, and their record is more important to them than playing better competition in order to improve their team. A lot of good teams really don't face a lot of tough competition until 2-3 rounds in the playoffs. To those teams that will schedule these tougher teams during the year, good for you. You have to compete with the best to become the best.

Your telling me that not one single Elite team is willing to play Richland Springs?? If that is the case then why is it that Richland is not playing every year at some form of a kickoff classic and daring teams to play them? When was the last time that RS played in Hico? It's only 98 miles from RS to Hico. You sure that it's not that RS is scared that they would get throttled by some D1 Beast? RS played May for 4 or 5 year and then last year they lost to May and didn't see Jerry reschedule them again. Wonder why? Also if worried about winning and losing then why does RS not schedule a powerhouse for a scrimmage instead they schedule Moran.
