6 man History

I sent that guy the article he was asking a few days after he posted he was looking for it...sorry I should have posted that I found it and sent it to him via email (Gatesville article)

Awesome:)

Help needed. In 1999, right as football was starting, the Lubbock-Avalanche Journal put out an all century team. I have lost my copy of it, but I am hoping someone has a copy and can get me one. It would be much appreciated.

Sorry, I can only get to as late as 77' for the Lubbock-Avalanche

I doubt I have that one from the AJ - but I will look. You sure it wasn't an All-Decade Team?

Sounds like it was probably a spin off from their usual All-South Plains Team annual newspaper selection...would be cool to look that over

Not positive on any of it, All I remember was it was 1999 and I was fortunate enough to be on it. I would love to have a copy of it again. My kids have asked me about it and I would love to show my boys. My oldest has said he would like to have it because I am in it.

Thanks for all of the help guys, it really means a lot to me.

Just go mining in archives you have not looked at before. I've found all my good stuff that way.

The Spur newspapers from 1954-1977 are now in the Archive. I've found several scores for Patton Springs, Girard, Peacock, and Dickens.

BTW...for those who care, the Girard Mascot was the Cardinal. colors red/white.

The Archive now has papers from Spur in it. I got quite a few scores from Patton Springs/Dickens/Flomot/Roaring Springs/Girard/Peacock/Jayton games from the 1950's and 1960's from it. It was also instructive to see the enrollments at Spur HS dropping from the high 200's in 1954 to less than 150 in 1977 when the Archive ends.

The Palmer newspaper now had editions from 1954 to 1965 in the Archive. There were articles in the September 1954 papers about the need for more folks to come to Bulldog games. They played 6 man at this time in a district with Trinidad, Venus, Rice and Richland. Then after the last week in September, the paper even quit mentioning the team.

Not as much 6 man history, but interesting nevertheless, a little one sentence blurb in the December 6, 1935 Comanche Chief stated that 46 football players were killed playing the game during the 1935 season.

You never know what you will find when you go diving into old newspapers. I just found out tonight that Bluff Dale used to have a high school and they played 11 man football in 1936. There was a game on October 18, 1936 where Comyn beat them 56-7.
