6 man History

ever hear anything???

No, I tried calling Thursday but no one answered. Ill try again tomorrow.

Taylor is about 40 miles from Briggs, so I don't think ill find an in depth writing on them in the Taylor paper. If I don't get a hit from the Post Master, then Ill Just have to wait and see if Florence or Copperas cove ever puts their papers in the archive.

How many days till football starts? lol

So I called Briggs this morning, The post master is out this week, but she left a note and the lady said it read: They were the Eagles 60s-70s.

According to Briggs History the school clonsolidated with Burnet in 1969.

I asked them to poke around for school colors, I ll call back in a week.

I will have to check...I have several...I do know that A&M has the entire run of the magazine at their library if you didnt want to spend a lot of money buying the issues with six-man stuff in them

Ok so I was in a mood today and made this list from Amazon:) Some of them are quite pricey and this is not a complete list. Stephen Ephler put out quite a few pamplets and revisions. Some of the rare ones go for $125.

Six-Man Football by J.D. Alexander Excellent instructional book on the basics of the six-man game

Grit and Glory: Six-Man Football by Laura Wilson On fall Friday nights, as the sun descends below the Western horizon, bleachers fill in cities and small towns across the nation. A ritual played out under bright lights will help define the lives of those gathered and will teach the boys who play about competition, honor, hard work, defeat, and victory. Laura Wilson, photographer and author, documents six-man football with forty black-and-white photographs.

Long Arm Quarterback: A New Football Team Sparks an Old Rivalry - Cap Wadell loves football; unfortunately, living in a rural town of 1,223 people makes putting together a team a little difficult. His grandfather suggests that Cap organize a local six-man team and play with other surrounding small towns. Recruiting players, finding uniforms, locating a field to play on, and securing a rule book are all easily done, but one major problem remains -- who is going to coach this team? Cap thinks his grandfather is perfect for the job, but trouble strikes when another grandfather thinks Cap's grandfather is playing favorites by putting Cap at quarterback. An old-time rivalry is about to heat up again as the grandfathers battle it out off the field and Cap and the other grandson battle it out on field. As the generations clash, nobody is exactly sure who will succeed and play the coveted quarterback position. Who in the end will prevail?

Barefoot,Bloodied and bruised: The Amazing Story of Louisiana Six-Man Football - How does sport impact a community, a school, coaches and players? This delightful book is about six-man football adopted by small schools in rural Louisiana during the 1940s and 1950s. The backstories and the stories of the games themselves highlight the values of the times and provide poignant, funny, and inspirational lessons about how football shaped the lives of many who became part of the Greatest Generation. Read about refs who were chased out of town, the woman who was thrown out of a game, unlikely heroes, amazing athletic feats and kids who were transformed into men. Interviews with the coaches, administrators, and players decades later reveal the value and meaning of their participation in the sport and its impact on their lives.

Six-Man Football – Reed Underwood This volume, that Jack Pardee terms "a dissertation on six-man football," is not only the definitive rule book for the sport, but includes a thorough sixty-five-year history of Texas six-man competition, the teams that have played, and the coaches who have developed and led them. Because of the continual sprinting, dodging, and aggressive contact demanded in every one of the forty minutes of play, six-man games are won on conditioning. For this reason, the book includes a chapter titled "Getting the Team Ready Physically." Strategies for offense and defense are detailed, including the O'Brien Wing Set and the O'Brien Veer, with input, also, for specialty teams. The playbook of over 250 offensive plays from various Texas six-man offensive formations will prove useful to those who compete in the game of six-man football

Six-Man Football – Ray O. Duncan - This little book will teach you everything you need to know about six-man football, a variant of American football. A comprehensive guide to the rules, techniques and strategies of the game providing knowledge for anyone that wants to play the game or want to coach the game. Chapters include: Stance and Charging, Blocking, Tackling, Kicking, Passing, Offense, Defense, Training and Administration

Slaughter Rule - A young man finds solace with a young woman, his mother, and a high-school football coach who recruits him to quarterback a six-man team.

Where Dreams Die Hard: A Small American Town and Its Six-Man Football Team – Carlton Stowers - Down Farm Road 308, an hour's drive south of Dallas, amidst sprawling fields of cotton lies a small community--Penelope, Texas (population 211). Here, where the only thriving businesses are the granary and the post office, unless you count the soft-drink machine in front of the fire station, two-time Edgar Award-winning writer Carlton Stowers discovered a special town that came together, not only to support their six-man highschool football team--the Penelope Wolverines--through thick and a lot of thin, but also, and more importantly, each other. Where Dreams Die Hard is a warm and revealing portrait of the American heartland--and of one small town's love affair with the team that unites it. "Through his unforgettable depiction of innocence, goodness, loyalty, and friendship...Carlton Stowers gives us a moving portrait of a community that, in the words of one of the Penelope faithful, is like 'stepping into a Norman Rockwell painting.'" (Billie Letts, author of Where the Heart Is) "High school football in Texas is

The History of Six-Man Football in North Carolina - Wilson County - John R. Ormsby The History of Six-Man Football in North Carolina in Wilson County includes the High Schools of Elm City, Rock Ridge, Saratoga, Lucama, Gardners and Stantonsburg. The sport was first introduced in the fall of 1948 and ran until the final year of the sport. This works includes all games played, won and loss records and most game write-ups.

The History of Six-Man Football in North Carolina: Aberdeen High School – John R. Ormsby - The history of six-mam football in North Carolina features the 1957 State Champion Aberdeen Red Devils
You Know You Went to a Six-Man School When... – Calvin B. Brown - While growing up a small town country boy may not sound like the most exciting childhood, it does have its moments. It only takes one shortsighted moment of pure genius to become one of the legendary town stories that are destined to become an urban legend. Most people think they know what life is like in small town Texas, but let me tell you most people don’t have a clue. In Texas, there is distinction given to the smallest towns. That distinction is that the school is not allowed to play football with more than 6 players on the field at a time. I say players because some Six-Man schools have fielded coed teams. In truth, the big difference between a small town and a Six-Man town would be the lack of the town. Most Six-Man towns consist of a school that houses K-12, about 25-50 homes, anywhere from 1-100 churches, and if you’re lucky a store or two. I started this book with the intent of sharing short stories about what real life is like in a Six-Man town. What I ended up with is so much better. Most “big town” people think of small town life like some kind of one liner. So what better way to replace those ill-conceived fraudulent one-liners than with one-liners of our own making?

Those Thrilling Days of Yesteryear: Six-Man Football in Alcester, South Dakota – Dave Healy

Six: A Coach's Journey to a National Record – Marc Rasmussen - In the 1940s and 1950s, unable to field competitive eleven-man football teams, small towns across the United States started playing six-man football, instead. Claremont, South Dakota, was one such place. Bill Welsh strode into town in 1947, started a six-man team at the high school, and six years later had racked up a national-record of sixty-one consecutive victories. His career as a high-school football coach is without equal. His role as mentor, coach, and teacher influenced the lives of many young men across the state, but his legacy is that of the Claremont Honkers and their domination of six-man football in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Minnesota. Marc Rasmussen has revealed this hidden history, unveiling the many facets of Bill Welsh’s life and shining a spotlight on the sport of six-man football and the all-conquering Honkers.

The History of Six-Man Football – Pinehurst – John R Ormsby - Pinehurst High School was a 1946 entry into the ranks of North Carolina Six-Man Football and continued until the game was discontinued after the 1958 season. While they won no titles, they were a tough competitive team competing with the likes of three of the top teams in the area which included state champions, Southern Pines, Aberdeen and Candor. A bonus section is included for the girl's basketball team from 1945-1969, which was the golden years of girl's basketball before consolidation changed the game to boy's rules.

you have learned a secret tool in finding six-man trivia! Using amazon to find books that mention six-man football in them...I have come across a lot of cool factoids that way!

I always check amazon in case there are editions of Six-Man Football Magazine that pop up

Funny...I was tolling amazon last night actually!

John Ormsby has made a lot of books featuring schools that played six-man football in North Carolina (also features early women's basketball 3 on 3 style) money for his books are donations to some preservation project I think...

Murphy's book is cool! He has some stories about LA teams playing TX teams in it

The prices for the old rule books are crazy! My advice if you want to buy them is wait and get them on ebay when they come up...I just bought one for $1 last night that others are trying to sell for over $100!

Ghost school update. Yall may already know it, but I didn't see it on LSN.

Malone mascot was the Owl

Where is Malone and who did they play?

Never mind, they do show up there, just not in the ghost schools. The records there show them playing one game against Milford in 1938.
