A Waskom fan has been feeding me some scores for his school lately. He has a trove of old annuals that included Waskom's 6 man years. Hopefully he can scan some old team photos too and send them to me. There have been a few surprises and some new Ghost League schools I had never heard about before.

New Ghost League schools

Greenwood (East Texas) I could find nothing on this school. They had a 6 man football team up through 1940.
Union Ridge - Near Gilmer, Consolidated with Gilmer in 1949.
Byrd - Near Waxahachie, school closed in 1957.
Leesburg - played one year of 6 man before dropping football after 1946.


Now for the surprise - New Diana played at least two seasons of 6 man in 1940 and 1941.

What if I told you that New Diana played in 1956 as well, and made there debut in 11-man in 1957

In 1970 - The Gilmer Mirrior ran an article on Merritt Griffin who was being honred with a Honarary Life Membership in the Texas Association of School Administrators.

3 of his achievements were

1938 - District Championship while coaching six-man at Elyison Fields
1944 - District and Regional Championships while coaching six-man at Union Hill

He had 40 years of school service in 1970.

According the the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

Tarzan, played six-man for a couple of years. The article was from 29 Aug 1971, but said the team had been halted due to lack of boys for a couple of years, but they were hoping it would return.

What if I told you that New Diana played in 1956 as well, and made there debut in 11-man in 1957

New Diana was under UIL suspension in 1956. I don't know about them playing 6 man that year, but they played several 11 man private schools, as well as Haskell, which was also under suspension in 1956. They had been playing 11 man since 1949....

Must have been the jr high in the pre-Grady days, as the Tarzan high school kids went to Flower Grove before Grady High School was built.
