A little snippet from the BS Herald....
From a Tommy Hart's sports column 10/3/1958: In the recent eight-man football game between Ackerly and Wellman at Wellman, one of the longest "time outs" on record occurred During the first half of play, a car ran into a light pole next to the field, snapping the wires and plunging the field into darkness. It took an hour and a half to repair the damage.

Sounds like something that could only happen at a 6 man game back then. I can not only remember when Garden City got lights (and new field) but also who they played first game (Paint Rock) and the GC player who made the first tackle (Billy Robinson). For the life of me, can't remember the year, though. Tells my age don't it?

1950

I think GC just built a new field on the other side of what used to be what we called the "Old Gym", which was the new gym for you guys, and was replaced by a field house in the 80's or 90's.

Do any of you Dawson County denizens know where the old Union school was located there? It closed in 1953 and shifted it's students to Sparenburg and Klondike, mostly to Klondike, as players from the old Union school were responsible for the Cougars winning their first district title in 1953.

Here's what I found on Briggs...http://www.briggstexas.com/pictures/cur ... ages/1.jpg Briggs, Texas is at the intersection of U.S. Highway 183 and Farm Road 2657 in northeastern Burnet County. The population subsequently fluctuated between 250 and 300 until the late 1960s, when it declined to ninety-six. In 1969 the Briggs school was consolidated with the Burnet district. In the late 1980s Briggs had two churches, a post office, two service stations, and scattered residences. The population was ninety-two in 1990 and in 2000.

I mapped out all of these schools last year. Union was one I had difficulty finding a location for. From all descriptions I ended up posting it at 32 degrees 40 ft 26.55 inches North and 102 degrees 03 feet 51.07 inches West.

Yeah its just a curve and a stop sign before you hit 183 now (coming from 190s direction). I believe bug acres is close to it. Thats the guy that collects all the VW bugs and sales the vw parts from.

When i lived in Austin a couple of years back, I would drive through it headed to pick up the kids in Kempner. If you come from 190, Kempner is the first light after Copperas Cove, take a left, then its another 8 to 12 miles to Briggs.

Taking Lemans advice.....I called the Post Mistress in Briggs (very nice lady) and she said that she would ask folks when they come in, if anyone knew their mascot and colors. I told her that I'd call back in a week to check up.
