I think some of the last pictures here might be the school; I sure remember driving through there a lot of times in the 80s and about 10 years ago when business took me between Del Rio/Uvalde and Laredo. My guess is that the school probably joined up with Asherton, just to the north, and now part of the Carrizo Springs district.

Also, Pawnee might have to come off the ghost school list, based on a phone call I got today. Pawnee is actually a stand-alone PK-8 district, I thought their kids were part of Beeville ISD, but not sure ... could go to Karnes City for high school as well. But the call I got today was that they would like to re-start their junior high football program as a 6 man team.

Maybe with all the oil patch activity, they'll consider re-starting the high school too.

Old Bearkat, Let's revisit the premise that Panther Creek was the team of the 90's. For strength of schedule year in year out, Gordon easily wins because of the yearly feud game with Strawn. Gordon had to beat Strawn and in the 90's they did with regularity, but Strawn has always been more competitive than any of the district opponents that Panther Creek played. The playoffs sometimes present some teams with little more than walkovers, Gordon did not have that luxury, they had to beat Strawn to get to the playoffs. Your point system does not take account who a team ( strength wise ) had to beat to win district. Also the fact that Panther Creek was a recent consolidation of two six man schools kind of boosted their talent level when combined.

That is entirely subjective and not amenable to objective analysis. One of Gordon's state titles still causes a lot of controversy over a referee call, while PC totally dominated both of theirs, and the first one they had to go through two very tough teams in Christoval (twice) and Ft. Hancock. Also, I think you can consider Christoval the equal to Strawn in district play, as they were in PC's district until they went 11 man in 1994.

Trouble is, even with the Eagle Ford shale, there's been little increase in permanent residents in those areas. Lots of hotels, RV parks, and "man camps," even talk of a "gentlemen's club" opening up in Carrizo Springs (which leads me to the horrendous thought of what's worse: being a guy looking forward to going to a "gentlemen's club" in Carrizo Springs, Texas or a young lady setting her sights on a career as a performer in a "gentlemen's club" in Carrizo Springs, Texas, because I've been to Carrizo Springs ... and my highlight was that I was able to, within a few hours, leave Carrizo Springs).

Most of the headquarters or back-office functions are coming to San Antonio or Corpus Christi. For example. Haliburton is opening their Eagle Ford operations office in San Antonio around IH-37/US 181. And the recent news is that the Port of Corpus Christi is now exporting more oil than it is importing.

Also found that Asherton merged with Carrizo Springs in 1999.

Thanks, I'll update soon.

Yeah, that just confirms what I've seen with the West Texas oil boom. Midland/Odessa grew, but the littel towns Like GC, Rankin, Grandfalls, Sterling City, etc are not. No one wants to move there. They'd rather commute or live in their camper trailer until the work moves on to another location.

An interesting article from the October 20, 1938 Lubbock Morning Avalanche

Six-Man Football Scheduled For Spur Tonight
SPUR, Oct. 19—
Charles A. Jones Memorial Stadium here will be the
scene of strange goings on to football fans Thursday night. Two teams
will be on the field battling each other—but there'll only be a total of 12 players.

It's six-man football, a rapidly rising sport for small schools of the
country. Two all-star teams will stage an exhibition here by way of
introducing the game to fans who have not seen it.

Dickens Cops Title
The six-man team is not new to this section, however. A league of
four teams has just finished a round-iobin schedule. Dickens won
the championship. Other teams were Roaring Springs, Patton Springs
and McAdoo.

Thursday night, at 8 o'clock, fans, coaches and players will be privileged
to watch a hand-picked team from the Dickens-Patton Springs
squads play a similar sextet selected from stars of Roaring Springs and
McAdoo.

Six-man football teams consist of three backs and three linemen—a
quarterback, two halfbacks, center and two ends.

Lineups Are Given
Probable 'starting lineups for Thursday night, with replacements:
Dickens-Patton Springs — Holley and Norris, quarterbacks; Armstrong
and Newberry. left halfbacks; Good and Gates, right halfbacks; Dodson
and Blenden, centers; Green and Goodson, left ends; Futch and Ragland,
right ends.

Roaring Springs-McAdoo — Prather and Cypert, quarterbacks; Robbins and Eldredge, left halfbacks;
Kingery and Van Meter, right halfbacks; McCarty and Owens, centers;
Branden and Roberts, left ends; Vaughn and Phifer, right ends.

Admission to the game will be 15 and 25 cents.

I remember hearing a radio report a year or two ago talking about the average daily hotel rates in Texas. First was some swanky joint in Dallas, second was the Driskill in Austin, and at least five of the top ten were places like the Holiday Inn Express in Cuero or places in Pearsall or Karnes City, all in the Eagle Ford area.

In fact, there was an article in the San Antonio paper the other day about someone who opened a fine dining establishment (similar to those you would find in New Orleans, Dallas or Houston) in Cuero for the high-end diner.

Let's just say the last time I ate in Cuero, scallops with lump crab wasn't on my plate ... I think I got the lunch special at Dairy Queen (I do remember leaving my laptop there back in the 90s and the next morning when I realized I left it -- and that's when laptops resembled bricks and cost several thousand bucks and belonged to my employer -- they said, oh sure, we found it, just stop by and we'll have it for you -- and they did).

When I went back to San Angelo earlier this year for Dad's death and funeral, my brother was telling me motel rooms in Midland/Odessa were going for $200 or more per night, if you could find one. This was for the fleabag joints. Holiday Inn types were even higher. They were $120+ in Angelo.

Old Bearkat, So it appears Panther Creek has a better body of work in the playoffs in the 90's but Gordon was more consistent winning 8 more games and losing 10 fewer games. Gordon was the winningest team of the 1990's and unless I am missing another hidden football power out there, Gordon is the winningest 6 man football team over the last 50 plus years. It pains me to post that since I played at the rival school. Panther Creek as a school of course has not existed that long and most the other power schools have more recently played eleven man. That should make all the Gordon faithful proud. I think I know who the second most winningest school is. I think the Gordon logo would look better with shades of brunt orange, may be a color change would help. Meanwhile, back at the ranch........

OK, here's another topic to chew upon. Small school family football dynasties.

Let's start off with one discussed last year (or two), the Cooley family in Borden County. I've seen newspaper articles mentioning them as athletic stars as far back as the late 1950's/early 1960's.

Another one was the Risinger clan from Bula/Three Way, mostly Bula.

Any more?
I would say the Campbell clan in Gordon. That includes the Kostiha's as they are directly related.
3 in the Texas Six man coaches hall of fame.
Coach and player Nelson Campbell
Lyle Campbell (Nelson's son)
Jim Kostiha (Nelson't nephew)

Also, our principal is a Campbell by marriage (married to Lyle)
our head coach is Joe Kostiha (Jim's brother).

Yep, that's another one. Any more?

I have another, the Leos family in Oglesby....
