Same Distance For Chiefs

Dear Editor:
As you know, (since it was reported in your paper), the
Lubbock Tornadoes played the Key City Chiefs of Abilene in
Lueders, Texas, by invitation of the Chiefs last Sunday, October
11: The game finally took place after two time changes and three
changes .in location. The agreement with the Chiefs was
to play October 11 in Abilene with a second game to be played
in Lubbock on October 18.

The world champion Key City Chiefs were soundly defeated by
the Lubbock Tornadoes (who have no former Texas Tech
players as was falsely reported in your paper Sunday, October
11). AFTER this defeat, the Chiefs decided it was too far to
drive to Lubbock to play the Tornadoes on October 18. Would
you please check your map to see how much further it is for
the Chiefs to drive from Abilene to Lubbock than for the
Tornadoes to drive from Lubbock to Abilene!

OR — could it be that the Chiefs refuse to again play a
team that could beat them "fair and square" on their own field??

Your sincerely,
Mrs. SUE MILLER

The following two Sundays, the Key City Chiefs will play at

Key City Chiefs Lose To Lubbock

SNYDER - The key CityChiefs suffered their third
straight setback, dropping a 41- 12 decision here
Sunday to the Lubbock Tornadoes in a six-man
professional football game.

Carl Miller passed 15 yards to brother Jerry Miller
to put Lubbock on the scoreboard first,
and the Tornadoes were never
headed

Maybe I'll gig the ARH on missing the end of the article too 40 years after the fact.....

Sand Devils, Sweetwater To Clash At 2:30 Today

Professional football takes over the spotlight at Memorial
Stadium this afternoon when the Big Spring Sand Devils play
host to the Sweetwater Bombers.

Kickoff time between the two pro six-man teams is set for
2:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the game will go toward the support of the
local United Fund.

In their only outing this season the Sand Devils won
over the Abilene Key City Chiefs, 32-18. In that win over
Abilene, Sam Evans had two scores, Ben Marquez scored
once and Curtis Fluellen scored twice on passes from Gary Hise
and Eugene Walton.

Probable starters on offense for Big Spring for today's action
are Bobby Heith and Fluellen at the ends, Charles Burdelte
at center, Duffy Clemens at right half and Robert Evans at
left half. Player-coach Gary Hise will handle fhe quarterbacking
chores for the Sand Devils.

Getting the nod defensively for the hosts will probably be
Saul Marquez and Danny Bennett at the guards, Sam Evans
and Larry Broughton at the linebacker posts and Lenard
Evans and Benny Marquez in the backfield.

Other squad members for the Sand Devils are Gary Hughes,
Don Mince, Walton, Billy Pineda and Dorm Shaw.

Chiefs to Battle Big Spring Club

SWEETWATER - The Abilene Key City Chiefs will
battle the Big Spring Sand Pebbles in a six man pro
football contest here Sunday.

Game time is 2:30 PM at the Mustang Bowl.

I think they got the Big Spring team's name wrong......

That's all I could find in the Archive in both 1970 and 1971. There was nothing in 1971 about the league or any of the teams. I don't remember reading or hearing about this league back then and my parents subscribed the Herald.

Its sad society has progressed so much that it makes it nearly impossible to have a league like this anymore.

Im on vacation next week gents... im torn between Temple (Bell), Gatesville (Coryell) and Cameron (Milam)....

Any recomendations?

Been meaning to drive down the road (about 6-8 miles from my house) and post these pictures.

Dowdy School (Guadalupe Co.) played six-man football from the late 30s until it closed in 1951 (absorbed into the Seguin ISD). The property is now in private hands, but the only remaining structure from the school is a single, solitary goal post, which can be seen from Dowdy Road (just off FM 1150, about four miles south of IH-10.

Flats ... not sure if the Dowdy team was ever any good ... I had a friend in a Lions Club who played for them their last couple years and it seems to me the stories he told more dealt with the post-game festivities ... like how the team really liked those long road trips back from Harper because the cheerleaders rode along on the same bus ...

Thanks for the info and links.
The picture of the girl's BB team in the 1st link revealed this.
Champion Roughnecks
The Dowdy High basketball championship team in 1935. At this point the sports teams were called the Dowdy Roughnecks.
The girls objected and it was changed to the Dowdy Broncs.

Wilson Rallies To Beat Pettit, 25-20
Wilson High school's six-man football team was clicking in the
first and fourth quarters Friday afternoon and won a 25 to 20
thriller over Pettit.

Roy Lynn Kahlich and Sam Kirby proved a fine passing combination
for the winners, and sparked the Wilson club's drive to the victory.
Wright, a fine running back for Pettit, was the star for the losers.

Wilson got away to a 12-0 lead in the first period, than were held
scoreless until the final period when two more touchdowns were pushed over.

Pettit staged a great comeback drive in the second quarter, and
scored all its points in this period.

Wilson will play at Whitharral next Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock Coach M. D. Smith announced
