6 man History

I ran across this little gem in a 11/2/1973 Big Spring Herald issue....

Death of Texas eight-man football may be on the way
The number of teams playing the eight-man game this
year dropped to 32, lowest total in years, and for next
year it will be down to about 26. Another team decided to
make the jump to 11-man ball this week, as Dist 3-B
accepted Sterling City into its league, joining Bronte, Sands
Jayton, Hawley, Loraine and Roby.

The UIL has tried, in years past, to convince the six-man
football faction they should change to eight-man since
it's more similar to the standard game. Six-man plavers
get very little fundamental training in the game except
maybe for defensive backs or offensive runners since the
game is so wide-open.

But there are around 60 teams playing the six-man game
and they pretty well like things the way they are ...

Actually the writer of this article seemed to be unaware that base upon the wishes of the 6 and 8 Man Coaches Association and the schools, 8 man had been put on the execution block 3 years earlier, which is probably the reason Hermleigh and Trent went from 11 man to 6 man in 1970 instead of stopping in 8 man.

Fixed. I went off what was in Lone Star. Email Shanon with an update.

Thanks, this is from THSA. It says 1958, but high school went in '56 and elementary in '58. Thanks for all the info.

A four-room brick building was constructed and named Pearl School. In 1958 it was consolidated with the Evant school, and the building became the Pearl Community Center, which is still used for reunions, quilting bees, and parties.
It is also home of the monthly Pearl Bluegrass Jam and Stage Show
