Who is #2 in D1?

I think Union Hill is the 2nd best team this year in D1 behind the best team, Gordon, to ever play high school 6-man.
When people say "best team" I wonder if they mean mean most talented or most accomplished? Many people would say Gordon is the most talented, but surely noone would claim they are most accomplished. From 1988 to 1992, the Fort Hancock Mustangs went on a remarkable 70-game winning streak. During this period, they won four consecutive state championships, part of a broader run that included five state titles between 1986 and 1991. They are undoubtley the "most accomplished" team in sixman history. Just trying to make sure we aren't prisoners of the moment...

This is about prisoners of the moment. 2nd best D1 team in 2025 to Gordon. We will never know for sure but my opinion is Union Hill. My opinion is that Gordon is the best 6-man team in the history of High School football.

The thing about the fort is there was no divisional split and was less teams due to the enrollment figures. As accomplished as they are. To be honest. In my opinion only. I think there’s others factors that will lead me to say this. Due to the growth of the sport. The knowledge of coaching. I can list many others teams aside of Gordon that would be better than the Fort. In my opinion. They do have the accomplishments that might not be matched. Kinda like Wilt Chamberlain 100 point game. But doesn’t mean they were the greatest team. I love conversations like these cause they’re just fun and healthy and just love discussing the history of the sport.

I would argue the division split has made it much easier for teams to win multiple titles....so Fort winning their 4 in a row was harder imo. The bracket had tougher matchups from bi-district on making upsets more likely. I think we all can agree that the last two years a Jayton v Gordon state game would have been much more competitive thus a tougher game for both. Winning 3 titles in a row is hard no matter what let me be clear there...but there have been much more repeat champions since the split than before it. Still think this Gordon team is probably the best offensive team and for sure of the top teams ever.

As for Gordon vs The Fort mythical game...it is hard to decide which Fort team was the best but for sure they seemed to have an issue with PATs...if you watch the 1988 state game they are dropkicking PATs...The Fort would find some holes with their passing game but I think Gordon beats which ever one you pick.

When Fort Hancock's schedule is studied you find the round robin schedule that was less than competitive. There were years that few if any of their district opponents even scored against the Fort. Remember Hancock played each district team twice each season. Given the location of the district, we all understand how that came about but doesn't lend one to believe the Fort was unbeatable just didn't have much competition. Their season only started in the playoffs, and they dusted their competition easily. Curious if Fort Hancock will up their game some now that their games will count for something again.

That doesnt apply for playoffs...they still had to win those games. Those Christoval teams were the real deal...1988 New Home and Christoval were tough playoff games, 1989 playoffs games were brutally tough, 1990 might have been their easiest schedule but also might be bc they were so good, 1991 not easy playoff schedule either. They scheduled Jesus Chapel non district a few years and that was a good school remember...in short their schedules were not cupcakes even though they had some easy district games (Dell City and Balmorhea were not cupcakes for the record)

Agreed, I think Gordon still 3 peats, but the division split has ruined "what could be," so to speak. I think Gordon only allowed as many points as they did this year to get experience for next year. Jayton barely beating Benjamin tells me they wouldn't have made it to 4 quarters this year, and maybe last year too.

Who knows Jayton makes it to the finals this year without divisions... Best dont play the best in 6man football because of the split. We all know Gordon wins outright this year... but Jayton probably would've been there instead of Rankin. Who knows? That's why I hate the split. Again... two more mercy rules in both divisions state championships
