What Now?

Smokey check out a tank and see where the hogs are waddling then find you a good spot to sit, a safe spot and let them have it when they come to waddle and drink.

When you have a particular model that is hard to find in mind, it can be a little difficult to find a lay away. I've got a couple of pretty decent semi autos. They're just limited capacity guns.

Good night John Boy and everyone else. I had an exciting time tonight visiting with all of you.

Shane we need to hear the Ram Story. I've been waiting on you.

Have a friend that owns night vision gogles(sp). His nephew will use them with a green dot infrared scope, walk out amongst the hogs, find his dot, and shoot from the hip. The muzzle flash will blind him momentarly if he takes a normal site. A red dot blends in with some of the hogs and makes it hard to see. He says his nephew will get several hogs every trip out. He also says that a person can drive at night without headlights. It will scare the bejesus out of anyone riding with you!

Marine sons have told me that a problem on base is guys "borrowing" night vision goggles and driving around in the dark with no lights.....Bad problems when you meet another car with lights. Makes 'em blind and liable to panic and crash.

That Gen 3 with an IR illuminater is amazing. It turns night to day. It's hard to get used to looking down the "string" of a laser sight at night with it though.

You and me both. He justified buying them 15 years ago by saying the hogs were knocking down 10 acres of grain a night.

You know a little 17HMR is really a fun gun, i love shooting it. I'm looking at the 17 Super Mag right now, for varmits and such, but just cant decide. Smokeys little 223 may be a better choice. Any thoughts ?

Buddy of mine in Western PA loves his .17. He shoots a lot of groundhogs and raves about it's almost flat trajectory over the distances he shoots and it's stopping power. He gets around the high cost of the ammo by reloading.

I looked at 17s .204& .223 among others. I really like the .223 for price ammo& availabilty. I shot my neighbors 17 & 204. Really didn't notice much difference when shooting at paper. I like psychology of a single shot....... It makes me bear down a little more and make sure of my shot. By the way I'm pleased with the Bushnell 4x12. Good clear view. We were shooting toward the northwest and could have used a filter on it due to the setting sun but got it zeroed in 8 rounds. Really 7 but wanted one more to be sure............. I've been kinda away from shooting for a few years due to some shoulder problems but I really enjoy target shooting.

If I lived in brushy, less windy country, I'd go .223 all day long. Up here in flat, open, windy country I've found .243 to be a better varmint choice. I haven't tried .22-250, but it looks like a good one too.

I always thought the best deer gun for our Hill Country was a 30-30. That was my first deer rifle Winchester model 94 with open sights. I was 22 years old before I shot through a scope. Also used a Springfield 1903 30.06 and a litlle M1 carbine. We had a lot if surplus or "souvenir" ammo from WWII

I want a .17 HMR. I have a .22 Mag, and I really like it for turkey, coons, plinking and such. But I still want a .17 for all the same stuff. I like .22-250 or .223 for coyotes. I haven't hunted coyotes much the last couple of years. Zach killed one last month while we were deer hunting (with his .25-06). I'm planning to do some calling after deer season this year. Zach decided not to play basketball this year, so maybe we'll have some time to do that.

I absolutely love my 17hmr, it is really good for pickin off little varmints at 50 to 100 yards. High velocity, low drop, no kick. Its my favorite rifle to shoot.
