Rankings

Forfeit wins are treated the same as a 45 in this system, just like they have been since I acquired the site in 2021, and I'm sure many years before that. A team can move up beating any team, JV or otherwise, especially if they beat the spread in the game. Even if they don't beat the spread, teams can move up and down based on what their previous opponents do. If TeamA gets 20 rating points for beating TeamB in week 1, then TeamB continues to fall down the rankings, then some of those 20 points that TeamA got will be taken away from them in later weeks.

Also important to note that just because you see a team move up in the rankings doesn't mean that they actually even moved up in rating. A team could lose rating points and still move up in rankings. It could be that a team, or teams, above them dropped enough rating points that they moved down below them. If someone goes down, that means someone else has to go up.
Just curious. Does playing a jv team go down as no game like a bye week?

I’m sure Mike would welcome a perfect system that some seem to think is out there. Mike is doing a lot of work on this site and I think he has a full time job that he depends on for his necessities. Thank you Mike for the time and money you donate to this site.

Mike most certainly would! If anyone would like to donate their time to building me a system that's better than this one, I'll gladly accept!

All I can tell y'all is that I do the best I can within my knowledge and skillset. Writing algorithms is most certainly not in my area of expertise. Still, though, I spend more hours than I'd care to admit every year trying to tweak numbers, and playing with old data, trying my darndest to make this system better. I'll continue to do that every year that I own this site. I can assure you all, there's no person on this planet who wants The Toy to be more accurate than me.

No. JV teams are rated just like varsity teams. Their ratings simply aren't displayed. Also, I've never tweaked those ratings in the off-season, so they're just carried over from previous seasons. They get scaled back, along with every other team, but I don't really change them any other than that. That's probably something I'll look at this off-season, but it never really crossed my mind until now. If a JV team has a really good season, and beats a few varsity teams, they could end up with an inflated rating to end the season. I should probably look at knocking all of those JV team ratings back even more during the off-season. I'm assuming @FenceLeaner is upset because Sidney moved up so much for beating Jonesboro's JV. It's because Jonesboro's JV had a 215+ rating, which is probably way too high for any JV team starting the season.

The good news is that Sidney will still have to play all their district opponents and, regardless of where they're ranked on this site, the outcome of those games is all that really matters. I am happy for the conversation it's started though.

That may be what he was asking about? I noticed that one and several others that didn’t add up in this year and past years. That answers my question for sure. It makes more since too me why some seem off and strange with the rankings. I don’t worry about them I think it is entertaining!! But i dont think jv games should be rated and it should be a no game if a varsity plays a jv. But it really doesn’t make a lot of difference. It always works itself out by week 10. lol

what he said.

Oh I am. And at face value they aren’t worth a lot. Lol. I’ve never seen a system that moves a team up in rankings when they get a forfeit win. Or a team that beats a JV team and moves up.

That right there tells me the rankings are about worthless.

This you bro? I think I trust the toy rankings more than yours.

Mike has a tab marked “FANS” where every single person can go select your own Top 10. Also, you can change your selection each week as you see just how wrong you may have been the previous one. Just a suggestion, but make your own Top 10 each week if you have an issue with the Toy. If you’re truly confident in your abilities screenshot and post that way we can judge you as the season progresses. How fun! LMAO

Forgot about this, at the bottom of the fan polls is “Other teams receiving votes” that did not quite make the Top 10. Quite interesting some of them are.
I played that pickem last year but it took too long to make picks so I didn't play this year. Pretty sure some people just vote for their favorite teams and then whatever teams they can think of in the fan polls. I think Mike needs to start banning people who don't do it right. Just like all these Wesp imitators and people who post that they heard something but won't say what it is they heard. What's even the point in that?
