2024 Rankings

How is Spur ranked 8 spots behind Ira when they are 5-0 & beat Ira in Ira on their Homecoming. Just curious

So this is just one of those where it's obvious that The Toy doesn't know who has played who. It just looks at team's rating, per week, and adjusts based on scores. Spur moved ahead of Ira in the rankings when they beat them. Ira actually dropped 41 points that week (fairly significant drop) and Spur gained 39 points (again, pretty significant gain). Spur has gained rating points every week this season, but they haven't gained a lot because they were already picked to win. Ira had a nice gain when they beat Robert Lee, because they were picked to lose that game. Then they had another decent gain when they 45'd O'Donnell, a team they were only supposed to beat by 3. So, yeah, Ira has just had nice gains on some "unexpected" wins. Unexpected as in from The Toy's prediction.

Had that number of games gone up every year?

You mean the number of mixed games? If so, I'm really not sure. I'm not sure if that is something that's ever been tracked before the last few years. Also, I don't specifically track mixed games. I only track UIL and non-UIL games. I just did some math this morning to come up with what'd be considered mixed games.

Buncha crybabies in here worried about rankings. If you want your team to rank high then tell your coaches to stop scheduling against Karen's daycare and play some of the tough teams. Beat those guys and then you can prove you belong at the top. Hell you don't even have to win. Just compete. You can't play teams ranked 200 and expect to be top 10 because you 5-0.

Without someone doing rankings somewhere's.
How do you get a tough scheduled or soft schedule?

What are you talking about? I didn't say don't do the rankings. I said don't cry about them. These rankings been the same for years. Beat better teams get a better ranking. Beat low ranked teams keep your low ranking. Besides that coaches know who the good teams are. They don't need these rankings to tell them. If they wanted to play better teams they would.

For all you statistical nerds out there, like me, here's a look at how The Toy has done so far this season. The hope is that it continues to get better as the season progresses, as it has in past seasons, but if not, we'll just say it's because we've got a lot of competitive teams out there.

That's actually not a bad historical win percentage by "The Toy". It's actually a lot higher than I thought it would be.

Been wondering something for almost 2 weeks and was going to let it play out. But since this thread was started here we go.

Ok Mike, Granger used to catch heck occasionally about rankings. Seems the forum has been too easy on you. Lol I can’t quite figure out the Aquilla Cougars rapid rise in the rankings/ratings

UIL DIV 1 RANKINGS
Pre-season
Rank #22
Rating 291.2

Game 1
#22 Aquilla 48
#114 Covington 20

Week 1
Rank #21 (+1)
Rating 289.1 (-2.19)

Game 2
#21 Aquilla 62
#112 ETHS 14

Week 2
Rank #9 (+12)
Rating 313.40 (+24.39)

Game 3
#9 Aquilla 60
#103 Oakwood 104

Week 3
Rank #9 (No Change)
Rating 313.56 (+.16)

Game 4
#9 Aquilla 52
#31 Milford 6

Week 4
Rank #6 (+3)
Rating 325.71 (+12.15)

Specifically it was the updated week 2 rise in rank/rating after beating #112 ranked ETHS in game 2 that has me perplexed. Aquilla beat a #114 Covington the week before by 28 with little change. At the time Aquilla jumped into top 10 I just could not figure out how that happened. Glad this thread opened. Thanks Tigerfan85
Lot of teams pad the schedule to go 6-0 . Abbott will take this district like they always do . 2nd place is up for grabs . I don’t see Abbott playing past the 1st half in any district game

Sixmanfootball and I have finally have the same D1 top 10 I have had for weeks now, though a slightly different order.
But this one has me scratching my head?

#22 Irion County
#23 Robert Lee

RL - 61
IC - 12
I know it’s just the toy and its algorithms. Robert Lee seems legit and will wrap up 2nd place unless IC upsets WV Friday.
I have Hermleigh over Robert Lee in Bi-District but may have to re-think that. Have to see how the Westbrook/Hermleigh game turns out in week 11. Dang it gets exciting this time of year. But no way is IC better than RL….lol

#23 Robert Lee

That's funny because when I look it shows the teams just the opposite. RL at 22 and IC at 23. Doesn't really matter, though, because they have the exact same rating.

I think Irion County's win against Garden City is holding them up. Garden City beat Nazareth and Robert Lee, and played close games with Westbrook and Buena Vista.

I think that is exactly it. Dang toy doesn’t consider injured players like #2 and #5 for GC on the sideline. Same for when GC played Rankin. I feel bad for the Bearkats, I think the injuries really hurt what could have been an outstanding season. But I did double check and my screen has IC the RL…didn’t notice the exact rating. Lots of ties going on.

Just curious why Water Valley went from #9 to #10 this week when they were picked to win by 28 but ended up winning by 45. Aquilla jumped from #11 to # 9 and had a bye week.

At first glance, I'd assume it's because Hermleigh dropped.

Rankin, BV, and Garden City are all 3 in one district. I don't see any others with 3 top 20(ish) teams. Happy, Nazareth, and SLE are top 30 teams as are Water Valley, Robert Lee, & Irion County.

Some with 2 include:
Abbott & Aquilla
Whiteface & BC
Jonesboro & May
Hermleigh & Westbrook

Who did I miss??

Throw Ira in there with Westbrook and Hermleigh. 3 in the top 30

I don't know what the difference is, but on my desktop, it was RL at 22 and IC at 23, but on my laptop, it was IC at 22 and RL at 23.

I’m on IPad about 95% of time and laptop the other times. No big deal, I didn’t even notice rating was identical until Mike pointed it out. I cut up about the ranking but honestly they are darn good. Some teams start way to high or low and takes half a season to iron out but at least we get a starting point. Even today I think the top 10 or 12 are spot on except for the order and we will find that out in coming weeks. I feel comfortable that both D1 and D2 # 1 ranked teams will still hold those spots after December 18th.
