Best six-man game ever??

I changed my mind...here is how I see them

#10 1967 bi-district Paint Creek 26 Hobbs 25...Rick Perry makes a pick 6 and PC makes the 1 point conversion with 2mins left to win it.

#9 1999 quarter-final Gordon 61 Panther Creek 52...PC was ranked #1 all year and not many gave Gordon a chance...but I did...went on this message board and said Gordon has a chance...Chance Kite...who was big in that game.

#8 2002 state Calvert 51 Sanderson 46...Calvert comes back down 32 at half

#7 1974 State Marathon 60 Cherokee 58...Marathon scores on a TD pass to tie it and a freshman makes the extra point kick to go ahead with under 2mins to play.

#6 2003 Semi Final Strawn 56 Richland Springs 54..underdog wins with short TD run dragging a defender with him after being hit in the backfield as time expires

#5 1992 Quarter Final Panther Creek 70 Cherokee 68...PC avenges a week 1 loss to Cherokee coming back after be down big at the half. Cherkoee score with a minute or so left to make it 70-68 and PC blocks the extra point

#4 1994 quarter final Balmorhea 71 Guthrie 70....see Grangers comments above.

#3 1994 Regional Game Amherst 12 Meadow 12...after Meadow makes a field goal to go up late in the 4th Amherst makes a long field goal after getting the go ahead penetration point as time expires

#2 2001 Semi Final RS 55 Woodson 54..to start the game both teams ran back kickoffs...RS scores om about a 30 yards dive run as time expires...had to be there to see it

#1 1996 State Gordon 51 Whitharral 50... Gordon down at half scores winning TD with 4seconds left to win...on 5th down! Best State game programs ever as well!

oneday, I like how you add that Rick Perry made the pick 6. For omeone who played 6man, you would think he would be kinder to the smaller communities. But to stay on subject I have to agree with most of your games, but how does 2010 BC/GC not make it to your top ten. I saw both those games with you and they were amazing.

I didn't think either of the Colorado games were great. Significant? Yes, but not that great as far as games go.... I was at both.

What oneday said about The Richland Springs-Woodson and Gordon-Whitharral games is 100% true as well. Amazing games. Lucky enough to say I was at those as well.

The Strawn-Richland Springs game where Strawn scored at the end was another. Several interesting things about that game. People thought I was crazy saying that Strawn could compete. Those two were very much alike, except one team had the big bowling ball and late in the game, he was a factor. The other thing was that I got to spend time with the legendary Gordon Wood in the press box of the stadium that bears his name. He had a great time and actually passed away later that week.

There was also the 94 playoff game between Guthrie and Balmorhea that ended with consecutive touchdowns on the last two plays. A news reporter who was at that game called me the next morning and faxed me the story and box score. Final was 71-70. Guthrie had scored to take a 70-65 lead, then kicked deep with 1 second remaining and Dutchover (I think) ran it back for the win. I had been at the Wellman-Balmorhea game the week before in Grady, so I didn't go to that

... probably because Mullin and Milford were battling it out at the same time in Hamilton in the Battle of the Bulldogs I....

There were 11 seconds left when Martin Sanchez ran back a kickoff as time expired to lift Balmorhea to the win over Guthrie.

Thanks... there were so many guys on that Balmorhea team that could flat out run.

also for cold games, I forgot the Trinidad-Panther Creek game in Glen Rose

Best one I have ever seen on the private school side was 2010 TAPPS D1 State Semi-final between Kerrville OLH and Bulverde Bracken. Bracken was up by a couple touchdowns early, then OLH took a lead late in the 2nd quarter and was up 14 points with 3 minutes to play. The lead could have been bigger, but Bracken's defense had some amazing stops at the goal line. After the OLH touchdown, Bracken scores quickly but misses the extra point. OLH recovered the onside, but couldn't move the ball (Bracken used all 3 of the time outs). OLH punted, then Bracken tied the game up with less than a minute remaining. The game ended up going to OT, and Bracken scored first, but their all-state kicker missed the extra point. OLH then ran a throwback back to the QB, that looked open and then Eli Achilles (then a sophomore) game from nowhere to force a fumble and end the game. And Bracken went on the next week to win the state championship.

I know not a lot of people saw this game, that's why I gave the short synopsis. Probably the best private school game that season.

Oneday, That Gordon/Whit game would have to be one of the best that I have ever been a part of. Man we were really down at half, Down by 30 something points and the locker room at half was pretty glum to say the Least, but Coach Campbell keept the meeting pretty short and to the point and got everyone believing in a win again. Watching those guys go out there and fight back like that was truely amazing. That would have to be my #1 pick as well. Just happy that I was there to share that experience.

I remember Strawn and Richland semifinal game somewhere around 2004 or 2005. I'm pretty sure it was Tyler Ethridge freshman year.
12/5/03 per the souviner cup in my office. TE was a freshman the next year in 04, RS 1st time to win state. Strawn had been to the semi's in 79 & 98 but that 4th & goal play was the 1st time to punch their ticket to the big dance. Jonathan was stopped at the goal line straight up the middle but stepped to the right & dove sticking the ball out about 1/2 way over the goal just as his knee was about to touch the ground. Must have watched that play & drive over 100 times over the years. Might watch it again tonight. Only time I've ever rushed the field after a game.

The one game that sticks in my memory was a playoff game between RS and Lometa. Etheridge had cut his hand on a helmet the week before and did not dress for the game. It was a close game at halftime then Tyler came out of the lockerroom and completely dominated the 2nd half. Kinda like Clark Kent coming out of the phone booth..........................

I believe it was 2002, Ft Elliot upset #1 Whitharral after injuring B. Hoskins. The next week they played Sands at Happy and it went down to wire. 4th quarter with barely any time remaining, Ft Elliot's QB threw a TD pass on 4th down to put them up but the referees said that the QB had crossed the line of scrimmage and took away the TD. The Amarillo paper had a picture of the QB's foot and it was clearly not over the line of scrimmage. Ft Elliot got robbed and Sands advanced to play I believe Ft. Davis, which was also a great game. I'll never forget the Ft. Elliot game though.

The same round as the Fort Elliot / Whitharral game, Sands knocked out Ira in the last few minutes 46 to 44. Heck of a ball game. That year Sands pulled out some squeakers before getting handled by Sanderson in the semi's I think

JC - those 2 games where great...but just not good enought to crack my top 10...top 20 yes! I am pretty sure that is the way the 1967 Paint Creek game went down...I am typing all this from memory at the moment...the only game I listed that I did not see live or on game film was the Guthrie Balmorhea game

Another game that is of note here would be 1992 Panther Creek v Christoval in district play...PC won 56-50 and their QB Humphries was crazy good! First time they had beat Christoval I think too.

The Lueders-Avoca vs Strawn Game last year was a great one. Lueders-Avoca was picked to lose by 45 and ended up scoring a touchdown with 8 seconds left to win the game by 2 points.

Are any of these games still around on film? Maybe someone that is computer savvy can post these in the YouTube part of this message board. Would be pretty cool to see some of these games.

wasn't it on Thanksgiving? or the Friday after?

Now if we want to talk the coldest game ever, there was a Strawn-Panther Creek game in Clyde maybe (or am I confused), the 1994 Amherst-Milford State Championship at Wylie where I bought a chili dog during halftime and it was just about frozen before I got back to the field... but my coldest (and HPD will attest) was the Samnorwood-Amherst game in 1994 in Silverton. That was absolutely miserable

Come on Granger it wasn't that cold in Abilene!
