I was looking around in the 1948 Victoria papers and found this little nugget of information about District 24B 6 man, mostly in Matagorda County.

Vanderbilt
Lolita-LaWard
Crescent
Markham
Van Vleck
Louise
Garwood
Blessing

This was the last year for 6 man in all these schools. The statewide consolidation wave of 1948-49 eliminated several of them.

Vanderbilt absorbed Lolita-LaWard, Inez (non football) and Francitas (non football). They went Class B 11 man for two years, then went on to Class A in 1951. Now a 3A school

Blessing, Markham, and Midfield (non football) combined into the new Tidehaven ISD and built a new Jr high and high school in El Maton. Blessing and Markham continue to have elementary schools today. Tidehaven went Class B 11 man in 1949 and on to Class A in 1954. Now a 3A school

Garwood went Class B 11 man in 1949, Class A in 1962, then in 1970 combined with Eagle Lake and Sheridan to form the Altair Rice Consolidated School, also now a 3A school.

Louise also went Class B 11 man in 1949. It is still in existence as a 2A school.

Van Vleck is also still in existence. It went Class B 11 man in 1949 and is also a 3A school now.

:) Yep. Dry boring archive searches. I history did not pay so lousy I might have gone into it instead of being an engineer.

BTW.....I've been through several of those little towns I mentioned when I was doing work at then South Texas Project nuke plant several years ago.

Ref: page110, there was Valley View PVIL in Upshur County Texas. It was in New Diana school district I think. I know nothing about them and football, but they did play basketball.

Interesting little data study to determine which active 6 man school has the most years in the sport. I blame it on Leman......

I counted 77 sixman schools. Just about half are no longer playing sixman. There are a few that have too many students to play sixman. There are 3 or 4 that have consolidated and are still playing sixman under a different name. (maybe a good many more than that)

Ivanhoe played football, they were the hornets. Search this thread and look back.

Dime box from what i know has never played football and always played basketball. At one time they were the only small school that could ever give Calvert a run for their money. That most likely was few and far between.

Something i found out this year though. Another town that I thought had always played basketball and now is only k-8th. Is Westphalia. I found out this year that their junior high has played 6-man football against Buckholts for quite a few years now.

Well that has changed now. We are launching the first six man football team in Dime Box ISD history next year!

Really cool!

Welcome to coach Rick Fry and Dime Box to the Six man ranks ! ( actually Coach Fry was at Brenham Christian Academy when they played six man.) They will eventually end up in a district with Calvert et al !

Out of curiosity, when/where were the first six-man private school teams? I'm thinking you'd have to hunt through the archives of the TCIL (Texas Catholic Interscholastic League), which may have been the first private school league in Texas.
