6 man History

My money is...Ad Hall and Sharp were HS team and the other 2 were club teams of some kind...I could be wrong about Seaton but that mascot is kind of like the ones I have see for town or club teams during that era...I think Merkel had one in the mid 30s...maybe Rising Star as well...

There were a few colleges that played six-man on some level...I have seen a few and have photos of some (all over the country)...I am not well versed enough on how they were made up or the purpose for them fielding a six-man team...the ones that did had both a six-man and an 11-man team in almost all cases...OBK might be able to shed light on it more...

In WWII six-man football was used as a rec. sport by the military...maybe in some camps and bases up into the 50s...once on ebay there was a team photo of one of the league champions from a WWII base...I didn't win the bid...

Sharp was a 6 man school for many years. 1957 was the last year we have scores for. They consolidated with Rockdale in 1960. I had never heard of Ad Hall before and there is nothing in Lone Star about them.

San Gabriel appears in a six-man district in 1941. District 21

I have seen Sharp before as well...I am still betting those 1938 teams and games were some HS and some club/town teams. Dates would help narrow some things down...if they played in summer than probably all were club teams or rec. teams...

Looks like they consolidated with Thorndale in 1960. FUnny how the small school consolidations seem to come in waves. 1946-1949, 1957-1961, 1972-1975, etc.

Its not really funny at all. About every ten years the state pushes consolidation by giving less money to small schools. Or change what the the money is based on... amounts to the same thing. Its usually tied to ADA. About 1953 or '54 the Supt. at Sidney could not make ends meet, told the school board that they might as well vote for consolidation. He took a job in Gustine, talked about half of more of the teachers into leaving as well. He did not put Sidney in a UIL district before leaving. The board hired another Supt. who did make ends meet, hired most of a new staff, saved the school. Sidney had to play two years of outlaw ball because of the old Supt. When they were finally assigned to a district it included Gustine. Sidney won the district for the next three years...and Gustine...well, thats how some rivalries begin.

So far all the 1938 games I have come accross have been played/announced during the normal fall schedule (end of August to Dec). but theres nothing to say they were still not club teams. it seems in the begining there may have been no boundaries for who played what. They were more about experience then general safety. That and bragging rights. haha

I do know Sharp opted out of the 1938 League, because they were kicking the guts in on 1A schools that year. The paper had an article on the 6 man league and that Sharp may only play 1 game. I never found that 1 game, but I do know they made it into the league without being present at the original league meeting, because of the challenge they had previously issued against San Gabriel. That might have been the one game (if they ever played it). Apparently San Gabriel was the 6 man-shizzle in 1938 around this area.

Ad Hall consolidated to Cameron. 1958

Seaton, I want to say i read some where they may have consolidateed with Rogers. (I have a HS friend thats last name is the same as the Coaches in 1938 and im trying to find out if there is any relation.)

Sharp along with 3 others consolidated with Rockdale. This area is kind of interesting if you look at the TX Handbook, Sharp actually consisted of 5 diffrent communites, then in 1960 Sharp along with 2 other communities not included with the original consolidates with Rockdale.

ill make sure I dont loose my dates this weekend :)

I thought this was an interesting article. It speaks of 111 schools in 17 disticts slated to play 6 man in 1939. The article talks about listing all the districs but then you only see district 7. I searched the rest of the paper but never found a continuation.

Copperas Cove, Jarrell, Ireland, Pearl and Turnersville

Official UIL List of Six-Man Schools has 112 schools playing in 1939. The one extra school that was probably included after the article you found was printed was Groom (it is the only one written in on the official list) in district 15...Groom won the district that year too

That is correct for District 7. Turnersville won the district

I recieved a reply from the folks at the Gatesville Messenger and they said they have copies in bound volume from 1936 to 1955, that may be viewed. They said they are quite fragile and that they may photographed or of course copied by hand to notepad.

I believe they are only open Monday - Friday. Is there anyone else besides me and CP workin on this from the Central Texas area?

When are we going to Gatesville?

IRELAND! If yall can find ANYTHING on that school and team that would be great!

That is already on the list of things to look for.

I'm betting they were the Leprechaun:)

When are we going to Gatesville?

I'll call them tomorrow CP and see if they are open weekends for viewings, otherwise I will have to wait and take vacation.
