Who is #2 in D1?

I would argue the division split has made it much easier for teams to win multiple titles....so Fort winning their 4 in a row was harder imo. The bracket had tougher matchups from bi-district on making upsets more likely. I think we all can agree that the last two years a Jayton v Gordon state game would have been much more competitive thus a tougher game for both. Winning 3 titles in a row is hard no matter what let me be clear there...but there have been much more repeat champions since the split than before it. Still think this Gordon team is probably the best offensive team and for sure of the top teams ever.
Leman how do you see Gordon VS jayton when coach Richie played or some of the Crowell and Borden county champs?? 2018 Mclean ?? Those are some of the best teams to hit the field. Not accomplished but thst team that year ??

The 1985 Jayton and 1982 Highland teams probably are putting out the best defenses as well as 2017 Borden Co that I think could hold Gordon to 4 and outs...question would be how many possessions they could do that and would they be able to capitalize and score points....2015 Crowell 2021 Strawn, 2018 McLean all teams in this convo...same as 1976 Marathon who had good size (like McLean and BC)...I could go real deep on this...let me think on this harder

I think the 2018 McLean team beats Gordon.
I don’t think Gordon could prevent McLean from scoring on every procession so all McLean would have to do is stop them once. I think they stop them several times.
In a non district game McLean handled an extremely solid team from Strawn easily. Strawn that year and Gordon this year would be a good game.
McLean doesn’t run Gordon off but it’s a solid 3 TD victory.

I think you’re somewhat right about the 2018 McLean team. They would definitely play Gordon tough. I’m just not convinced they win.

Using Strawn as the main reasoning isn’t a great case, considering Strawn had three losses that season — McLean, Milford, and Garden City, before obviously running through D2 and winning state. Gordon would get more than one stop, for sure. I remember last year when they compared the Whiteface running back to the McLean RB, and Gordon held him to around 38 yards, which is crazy low.

On the broadcast, it was also mentioned that over a 29-game stretch, Gordon has held teams to under 9 points per game. I also thought if Abbott played in almost any other era, they would’ve won back-to-back titles and rarely get discussed. What Abbott did over a four-year period was extremely impressive , and Gordon still showed a clear next level of play against them.

McLean’s defense was primarily man-to-man (hence the 70 points they gave up to Milford’s spread back, who was something special to watch). Whiteface ran almost exclusively man as well, and Rankin tried man coverage too and Gordon responded with I think it was like 13 one play touchdown drives. And Gordon clearly has according to track times 6 kids who were faster than him. Not saying better. Just faster.

I actually think the state Garden City team would play Gordon the toughest, although their defense wasn’t very good. Back in 2012, I went to watch Westbrook and Highland play basketball, and a group of us old-timers were talking and felt the only team we’d seen that could beat those state Highland teams was 2012 Throckmorton. Their defense was big and physical, and their offense could do just about anything they wanted.

I watched this year’s post-state press conferences, and when the Gordon coach, who also coached that 2012 Throckmorton team, said it wouldn’t even be close with these last two Gordon teams, that statement carried a lot of weight, considering he’s coached all them.

Great analysis!

Need to check your records, Strawn beat Milford that season, won State and finished the season 13 and 2. Lone Star Football Network has some comprehensive records, not always correct but close. Milford had a bad game against McLean, mostly because of McLean, but Milford's spread back had definitely lost a step or two in that game.

I was at that game and it was a good one. I do remember thinking that McLean was lucky the game ended when it did. I think Milford could have pulled off a win had it lasted another 2 minutes. Milford’s back was definitely special.
As someone said on another forum, Milford ‘s 2018 team was probably the best team I’ve seen that didn’t win a state title.

I clicked on the YouTube game and watched it today just to double check my memory on Milford and McLean .They were something special. He was a talent for sure. It’s really had even comparing older teams against the teams now cause of technology and the growth of the sport. Learning what works and coaches trying new things over the years and then being able to document it for others to study’ and learn.
No different than comparing the great past NFL teams against the current ones.
