Gordon vs Abbott Thoughts

Modern approaches to sports medicine actually suggest against kneeling during games in these situations. Some leagues actually "ban" it. The risks include cramping which Gordon was already battling last night. In cold weather like that it is risky to kneel for several minutes. I for one would have been pissed if my kid was kneeling out there in that weather. Looked to me Gordon left the area and went to the sideline and gave Abbott plenty of room and everyone on Gordon's side clapped and cheered for the player when he was helped up out of respect. In my many decades of going to games, when you are a really good team like Abbott and you are getting beat like they were, fans can be in a heightened state of critical. Abbott played their tails off and left it all out on the field. I for one was proud of their undying effort. Most teams fold up when they are down 38-0.

The sportsmanship you were looking for in that moment came with 2 minutes left in the game when Gordon got the ball back with one of the most explosive offenses in the history of six-man football and a 28 game mercy rule streak in the balance, and chose to spare Abbott instead of putting a metaphorical bullet in their head, which anyone on this site knows they could have done with one single play and continue their history breaking path. There's your sportsmanship you were looking for.

Thank you, Oliver. I alluded to this in an above post but your more emphatic, to the point. Gordon has probably made their point on this and established a new record that will stand for many years.

As an official, I am against it from a game management perspective. A lot of times (especially at lower levels) when a kid appears to be injured, the opposing team is coached to immediately take a knee to try to force the refs to call an injury timeout, which means the player must sit out at least one play. Most 'injuries' in lower leagues are not serious, and oftentimes the player just needs a second to catch their breath and decide they can keep playing. So when I see a team trying to force an injury timeout, I'm getting them up, and getting them ready to line up. And if I perceive that the injury is serious, then I'll send everybody to their sideline to get water and regroup. We watch carefully and as soon as he is moving off the field (under his own power or being carried off), we're trying to get the game moving again as quickly as possible, calling teams back to the field.

If it's a relatively short injury timeout, we're reminding them that this is not a scheduled team timeout, you don't get to stand around and discuss, it's time to line up and play ball.

very impressed with this Gordon team but didn’t expect anything less. Every team that Mr coach Reed has coached since 2010 or since I can remember all look like grown men amongst children on the field. They must have one hellacious weight program. Will be cheering for Gordon to bring home the hardware!

As someone who knows Coach Reed from his great years at Rule, I will say that anyone who thinks he or his teams would intentionally be disrespectful in any shape or form is desperately grasping. Like most coaches, especially at the 6 man level, he would be the first to help any kid at any school with anything he could. I hate that anyone felt that his teams would did something disrespectful but he came on here and explained the situation that unfolded in that moment so there’s really nothing else to say about it. He’s one of the best there is in the entire state & as classy as they come! I know, personally!
