Gordon vs Abbott Thoughts

Abbott had a player hurt on the field for an extended period of time and Coach Reed told his players not to take a knee. Is that the sportsmanship you are referring to?
Not taking a knee has nothing to do with sportsmanship (or lack thereof). I don’t want my players taking a knee…I want them moving around and staying loose, it has zero to do with disrespecting the injured player (which, a lot of times these past couple of years, has been one of our own teammates).

After the game my son was told by one of the Gordon’s players they wanted to knee but was told not to by their coach. If that’s not true then tell me why they didn’t knee?

I’m not sure why I’m even answering this, but out of respect for transparency and clarity and using my name, I believe I should.

After the conclusion of the hit on the Abbott player, I was approached by my kid trying to get an understanding of what he did wrong. At no time was I aware of an injury on the field and had to, in my brain, process that in the next 60 seconds we are in a 1st and 30 and explain to my player so we can move forward and prepare a group for the drive ahead.

During that process I see the player is being tended to by the Abbott staff.

At no time was there any disrespect intended by not taking a knee in 40 degree raining weather, for who knows how much extended time. I am always looking out for the safety of my kids, i didnt feel the kneel was necessary. I had received information from officials that the player was okay, as the information proved to be correct and he came back later and played an outstanding game. Right, wrong, or indifferent there’s your response. I apologize to anyone that it might have offended. But I also stand by how it was handled and take full ownership of handling it in real time with the information being given to me.

Again, the information given to me was the player was ok, and obviously he was, as he came in and continued to play an outstanding game.

But if your looking for a reason to say “we may have lost, but at least we have class!”

I guess you have your reason.

And I'm sorry that’s what you took away from this game.

You didn’t feel the kneel was necessary. At least you owned it. As fans of Abbott we are used to seeing our players take a knee and everyone we play do the same when a player is hurt. Last night Gordon decided not to. It is what it is.

In 2012 the Throckmorton Greyhounds led by Coach Mike Reed played Water Valley beating them 62-16. Both teams
were 11-0 and it was the area round of the playoffs. I knew most of the WV kids very well being friends with the parents. After the game I was shocked, they were upset yes but not disheartened, they held heads high and acknowledged they came up against a monster of a team. One WV kid said that they were just better and really strong and physical. Another kid said ya they just whipped us but they were classy always lending a hand to assist up after a big hit and complimented when they made a nice move or a big play, which were few. The handshake line…..WV players left feeling fairly good after several Greyhound players told them y’all were the best team we played this year and really good. That after beating the tar out of them. The entire point of my TRUE story is that the above discussion doesn’t sound like a Mike Reed team to me. I am startin see on this sight just how pitiful some people are when their team gets beat.

In 2012 Coach Reed made a positive impression on you. Last night he made a negative impression on me.

I’ve played against (long long time ago) I’ve refereed and I’ve watched Gordon many times through many many oh Lord many years. Never have I experienced anything but class from Gordon. EVER. Always well coached always played hard. Win or lose! I love a little trash talk on this site but I also have said it’s just for the fans never the players or the coaches. Congratulations Coach on another great season good luck at State! Safe travels. And as always Go May Go.

It was a blind side block
1. If he came back and played, it sounds minor
2. You’re missing the point of my post— in general the whole “taking a knee” thing is rather pointless, as it does nothing for the injured party. If it was actually important.. then everyone in the stands needs to take a knee as well
3. This would probably be towards the end of the list of things I’d use to determine if a team was “classy” or not

Could be why I'm a spectator and not a coach but if I was the coach I'd never have my kids kneel. They'd all stand in a line with their helmets off like for the National Anthem or they'd huddle up and say a prayer for the injured kid. This way they have full mobility to rock back and forth or whatever they need to do to keep loose and as warmed up as possible. Kneeling especially for a long time after being fully active can cause stiffness that's not needed in a football game especially when it's freezing cold outside.

If all you had to call a coach classless is cause his players didn't kneel during a very small moment in a game then you're just reaching. Probably mostly just you upset because you got smacked in a game you actually thought you could win.

1. The fact of it being minor or serious is not the point.
2. I think most folks understand the point you are making. The disconnect is that not everyone agrees with you. Some folks find it disrespectful.
3. I do not know coach Reed personally, so far be it from me to say what type of guy he is. Everything I have ever heard up until last night had been positive. What happened last night, IMO was disrespectful, Intended or Not. Is Gordon and Mike Reed "Classy"? I can't say. I can say that what happened was disrespectful to the young man injured on the field. It would have been equally disrespectful had it been the other way around.

Now, everyone jump on this and tell me how us Abbott folks are bad and everything that goes along with that.

Good luck to the Longhorns going forward!

Show me a post where I said anyone was classless

Oh sorry. I'll rephrase.

If you watched a full football game and have a negative impression of a coach because his players didn't kneel during a very small moment in a game then you're just reaching. Probably mostly just you upset because you got smacked in a game you actually thought you could win.

This just absolutely blows my mind and fires me up. I know the stands at Godley are above the field, which probably gave you the impression that you were above it all looking down upon the coaches, therefore worthy to judge. The fact that you don't even know what goes on on the field during those moments, or the conversations that are being had, and being able to judge a person's sportsmanship because he didn't turn around and yell to his team to take a knee and show respect?? There are endless factors when a player is injured. I've had multiple instances where the white hat knew a player was going to be okay and told my players to stay up so the game can continue once the player is off the field. To be that far away and attempt to judge someone just floors me. I'm sure you would handle every situation with grace and perfection if you were down there.

The sportsmanship you were looking for in that moment came with 2 minutes left in the game when Gordon got the ball back with one of the most explosive offenses in the history of six-man football and a 28 game mercy rule streak in the balance, and chose to spare Abbott instead of putting a metaphorical bullet in their head, which anyone on this site knows they could have done with one single play and continue their history breaking path. There's your sportsmanship you were looking for.

minor is kind of part of the point— I think we can all agree no one should have to take a knee for a cramp right???? (Side note, but players get to spend WAY to long getting stretched out from cramps on the field but I digress)

Also.. explain to me exactly why it is disrespectful. Like what specifically makes it respectful to take a knee when some one is hurt?
If the Gordon players were laughing and joking and making light of the injury, then yes that is disrespectful but it doesn’t really sound like that was the case.
