Field Goal

Back in the early 70's, Highland had a kicker by the name of Raymond Reyes that drop-kicked extra points accurately. Is that still legal?
Yes it is sill legal, and from a coach's standpoint, I would love for a kid to be able to drop kick. It allows for another guy on the line to help block. It just something kids have a hard time getting down, so it ends up being too inconsistent.

In the fall of ‘23, my son’s team had a kicker who was more than capable of 50 yard FGs. He was only used for kickoffs and XP. In the state semifinal, we had a perfect opportunity to kick a 30 yarder right before the half and it was almost like our coach didn’t know you could kick FGs. We went for it and almost threw a pick six (defender dropped an easy pick). At times, it felt like the coach intentionally made the dumbest decisions just to keep games close. My son graduated but I still follow the team and he’s still doing it. Almost every game he does something that makes absolutely no sense.

That kicker transferred to a 6A HS. Can’t say I blame him. If your goal is to be seen, you’ve gotta have opportunities.

Borden County has been blessed with a family that had 3 boys that could kick. It was a true weapon. We also had a young man in the 2009 state game kick about a 30 to 32 yard field goal to end the half. Ironically earlier in the year, in a game that was lopsided we elected to attempt a field goal instead of running more offensive plays. It was a right hash kick and we sold it as this could be a weapon we need in a huge game, this kick was from 34 yards and he nailed it from the right hash. Fast forward, kick to end the half and give us a 12 to 8 lead over Highland was a right hash kick.
The oldest of the 3 brothers that kicked for us from 2015 to 2020 seasons, actually kicked for tech one spring and made a 46 yard field goal in a scrimmage. They were in a transition of coaches and the outgoing coach had recruited 2 kickers so the two young men that kicked during spring were told they were more than welcome to try out and be a walk-on but they were going to honor the two incoming guys. Our kid was trying to get into law school so he opted to just go back to his studies and finish up undergrad and go to law school.

Anyway, sorry for the long reply. That family and the 2009 kicker were very instrumental in helping us be successful overall. All three brothers have hit multiple field goals for us. GOOD TIMES!!!! I'M GETTING OLD.

I have seen many games where the different came down to which team consistently had a good kick on the try versus the team that couldn't get the kick up and through. It compounds quickly in a high-scoring game!

I coached against Denton Calvary when Coach Bowden was the coach there. Whoever that kid was could absolutely kick the living you know what out of the ball, and very accurately too. It was very impressive to say the least.

Ahhh yes, the kicker :) I kicked for THESA before transferring to a 6A school and getting a scholarship. It is such a big part of the game that I am always excited to special teams play a big part in a game.

We had a kicker here in Bluff Dale last couple of years that fielded 2 D1 offers (LA Tech & UTEP) (his personal kicking coach was a prior TCU kicker and well connected). Anyways dude was good from 50 with ease, we only had two true opportunity to kick a FG in his time here, 1st was 4 & G from 27 and I called him to kick the FG, goofy sucker told the holder to toss him the ball on the snap (he ran it in for TD). Then second time 4 & G from 23 his senior year and the snap was bad so holder picked it up and threw it to Center streaking down the middle for TD. Still sad we never got to show his leg off on a FG but he was nails on XP (we have missed him this year at times). *Also was an extraordinary athlete (played travel soccer in DFW, I would argue it made him a phenomenal sixman player helped him understand how to attack space).
