What a Good Coach Needs

Doc there are so many life lessons to be taught every week...a measure of a coaches success is not always measured on the field but often is in what is not seen for years to come in a players life...Sometimes persevering through adversity shows the better character...of the player and coach...

You are so right. Some of the teams I enjoyed the most were the ones that didn't have the most talent, or the best record, but continued to work hard and improve every day. They had the right attitude and were fun to be around. For the level of talent they had, they got the most out of it. They were more enjoyable to coach than some that had the more talent, but attitude-wise, could care less, and you always had to worry about.

Needs to inventory his orphans(players) talent and size with speed and fundamental skills to determine what scheme would work best for this group...

I agree a good coach must have selective hearing, especially to maintain sanity. But a coach still needs to listen; it's an innate human need to be heard and a great coach still listens to his coaches and players. If a head coach fails to listen (shuts players/coaches down) to his team, players, and support staff, the morale becomes negative and the team plummets into a negative abyss. One sign of a mature coach is to listen, knowing at the end of the day he is in charge and will make his own decision.

Most of you said the best lesson you'd learned from a coach is "never give up." Charley, 16, told us, "We all have bad days and bad competitions and it's OK to be upset, but when you wake up the morning after, you need to set new goals and have a new focus."

So what would you do? "If I was a coach, I would train my players hard," said Monique, 16. "But I would be willing to help any of the players with schoolwork or problems."....from "What Makes a Good Coach"

A good Coach needs prayer and people who will lift him up when things get tough...

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand...Isaiah
