Water Valley vs Newcastle

I think Water Valley vs. Newcastle is one of the more intriguing matchups this playoff, mainly because it gives us a real barometer for what Water Valley actually is and what they might be capable of down the stretch. Up to this point, the schedule has given us hints, but not a true defining moment. This game has a chance to be exactly that.

If you want a comparison point to see if Water Valley is going to be an elite D1 team with the ability to push the D1 east representative then the Jayton matchup with Newcastle is the best lens we can use at the moment. Jayton is different than your typical high school roster. They’ve got three guys who wouldn’t just be considered top-tier six-man athletes, they’re elite athletes period, across multiple sports, with the résumé to prove it. When you evaluate Newcastle’s showing in that game, you have to look at it through the lens that they weren’t just playing a good team… they were playing elite, multi-sport, grand-stage athletes. And even in that setting, Newcastle showed what most of us already suspected from their scrimmages and early performances: they’re a legitimately a good football team.

So naturally going into the Jayton vs Newcastle match up. On paper looks to be a good match up. But after the 1st Q the level of football and players just was too much and Jayton showed it’s dominance, which many would say is a notch below where the Longhorns might be.

But here’s the key Water Valley question, are they a good football team, or a good team with some elite great players? That’s where the Water Valley comparison gets interesting.

Water Valley hasn’t faced a Jayton-level athletes yet. Their schedule hasn’t shown a superstar matchup that forces us to say “Yep, they can run with state-level speed and skill.” But they have handled teams with strong individual pieces. Robert Lee is a perfect example: one truly exceptional player surrounded by solid players, and Water Valley took care of business with ease. You can’t dismiss that result, but looking at the Newcastle score vs Jayton, Newcastle falls into the same category as Rankin (really good team, just no individual elite level players) but WV mercy ruled them. That puts Rankin, BC, Whiteface, GC, Newcastle, Ira, etc all in the same category of really good football teams but no elite singularly players. But Robert Lee does. So looking at the Water Valley game, WV controled the narrative the entire game. Showing that they at least have a good football team with at least more than one elite football player to dominate in the manner that they did.

So this matchup becomes another measuring stick. If the talk around Water Valley is accurate — that they’ve got the overall athleticism and team speed that can at least be in the same ZIP code as Jayton, and Gordon, then this is the week they need to prove it. Because if they are on that level, then they’re not just in the conversation for a playoff run… they’re in the conversation for maybe even pushing into a battle with the Longhorns themselves.

For Water Valley, this has to be a statement game. A convincing win would validate everything being said about their potential ceiling. It would tell us they’re not just a “good team with some good players,” but a true contender capable of punching with the best at the end. I’m pretty convinced that WV will mercy rule all the way to State Championship where for the first time this season both teams will see really good football team with more than one elite level athlete.

But if Newcastle is able to move the ball consistently, put up multiple scores, or keep it tight into the late third or fourth quarter, then the picture becomes clearer to how December ends.

Personally, I’d love to see WV dethrone the Longhorns ..only fair since they took away our 3-peat.

Prediction:
WV-60
Newcastle-15
3 minutes into third Q
Would jayton hang with Gordon?

Yeah I don't think so. Water Valley will easily take care of Newcastle. Newcastle got beat by May and I don't think May is even on the same level as Water Valley. Best team they'll play before Gordon will be Robert Lee and they already played them once.

WV has the ability to play and score on Gordon. It will come down to whether their coaches can figure it out or not...as in calling the right offense
lol don’t do that. Listen WV is a great team but it won’t come down to coaching. You could have Nick Saban on the sidelines, some things you just can’t overcome. We saw them when they were Babies when we had a great team and we had zero answer for them. Now they are men and it’s not even close. Go enjoy the experience because they go by fast.

Not sure I agree with your “can't hang” assessment. I would point to the 4X200 relay at the State meet only because that was the one relay where both Gordon and Jayton had underclassmen on all four legs.

Gordon did win, but by less than a second. That differential doesn’t really look comparable to a 17-point spanking in basketball.

Throw some pads and bicycle shorts on these guys, put them in a team environment in a restricted space and you might find that speed would not be the determining factor in the outcome.

Just my opinion.

My opinion, Gordon would "spank" Jayton on the football field in a football game. I have seen both play multiple times. Jayton is loaded with talent but not on that level. Trying to justify anything relating to football with a basketball stat is laughable to me, however overall track success is very relevant. By your logic you could easily say Gordon "spanked" Jayton by 28 team points at the state track meet last year. I will say this, Jayton is the best "West" bracket team in the state this year (D1-D2). I was not impressed with Water Valley last night at all, especially how hyped up they had been on this board. Its just too bad sixman is split into two divisions because you could easily see Jayton vs Gordon for the gold.

It is a shame about basketball. In my opioion they were the two best teams in the State and had to meet way too early in the playoffs. And the sad part is that they would most likely have been in different divisions had the UIL had a little more foresight.
I spent my younger year summers with my grandparents haunting the back roads of Gordon with my cousins who are still there. Spoke to one the other day and she is looking for revenge against Jayton. This may be Gordon's best chance ever at a basketball title, but Jayton doesn't seem too inclined to give it up.

WV did not play a good game last night, as matter of fact, worst of the season and still managed to roll Newcastle who by the way is way underrated. WV played with a very sick starter, had some cramping and minor injuries to key players, and the worst reffing crew ever. They would beat RL or at least give them one hell of a game.

Played worst game of the year, very sick, minor injuries, worst officiating crew ever, and the team handily defeated is way underrated….anything else? C’mon now. I’m a WV fan thru and thru but this is a pathetic post!

It’s too bad the championships are based on geograpghy… but that definitely gives schools a shot at some gold other than Gordon. The last two years Gordon has lost to the D2 state football champs in basketball. It takes that kind of team to challenge them at any sport id say. Man to man jayton totally shut down Gordon’s no. 1 score to no pints. They play physical defense, but thats not football. Last year Txline vs. Gordon were more equally matched in my opinion.

Are you surprised by this post. Go look at the rest of his post they are all the same. They are the greatest team to ever play the game.

No sir not surprised from this specific poster. No reason for me to go back and look, I know he/she has a history of this, I am aware, goes all the way back to last year. Very annoying.

Now the majority of fans don’t even get on this site. Great fan base and very excited for their team. Just enjoying the ride as y’all did, Awesome for y’all the first two years you made it to State you didn’t have Goliath waiting on your arrival. You got 2 rings before they arrived. LOL…. We all know who is waiting for their opponent again whoever it ends up being out of the West.

Oh but it’s ok for others such as the poster talking about Aquilla losing two players to injuries last night which explained their score…ok got it! 👌

And saying Newcastle is way underrated is hats off to them, because they are. Toughest team WV has played yet

I will have to agree that Newcastle has been the toughest team we have played all season. And I also think last Friday was the sloppiest game WV has played all season. None the less we took care of business. On to the next one Robert Lee.

I agree with 1st & 15, Newcastle played a good game and were a much better team than many here gave them credit for. I never got the feeling that they were out of it. They shot themselves in the foot a couple of times with penalties, otherwise, it could have been much closer. Good luck in basketball, Newcastle, and it's on to the Steers for the Wildcats. Finally a home game... for me! Now, if only Rankin can take care of Whiteface...
