Unpopular Opinion

Six-man fan
Here is your controversial topic of the week, I know this will probably be an unpopular opinion.

UIL should cut the season down from 11 weeks and 10 games to 10 weeks and 8 games. (In a perfect world every district would have 5 teams, so you would have 4 non-district, 4 district, 2 byes).

Benjamin will be a great example why once playoffs get going, those bye weeks they’ve had has kept them fresh. They will be rolling with health come November.

I think this could accomplish multiple things:

Keep kids healthier
Move season up or back
Add an extra weeks for fundamentals

I’d like to hear others opinion on this.

The reasons for the teams with more than one bye is not because of your reasons, but rather from difficulty’s scheduling games.

And the teams with great conditioning usually have very few “fatigue” injuries.
Everybody has fatigue injuries, I promise we’re conditioned fine. Body’s wear down from the contact more than the running.

I am very aware of why teams are missing games but there has been more than enough holes in schedules to refill.

I’m telling you this would benefit the kids, I am speaking from experience. Teams in the Division 1 don’t see as much with this issue but they aren’t playing 6 guys both ways, many split platoon or have just a couple playing both ways. In the smaller schools we’re playing the same guys 100% of the snaps with limited subs. It’s crazy last year I had 8 guys and only lost one to injury all year (many played through minor stuff, this year I have 17 but we’ve lost 5 as of now.

I just think you guys are missing the point of cutting games. Heck 6A doesn’t even play 10 games, some even play just the 8. Duncanville for example, the star of Texas High School Football right now.

I just think this is the formula to keeping kids healthy and getting them more time to learn the game without rushing them out there to perform. But there’s no advantage to it alone, me personally, I’d love to see the cut and be allowed to play a month of football in the spring. To really get to hammer in fundamentals and responsibilities. Would make a WORLD of difference.

Same but I also want them to perform at their best, to many fatigue injuries happening that could be avoided.
I played sixman many years ago and five of the six starters played both ways the whole season, including two rounds of playoffs(12 games total) without fatigue injuries. If a player is worn down or injured sit them down in practice as well as miss some games too. I can't see fatigue injuries or the potential for fatigue injuries as a reason not to schedule a full slate of varsity or JV games. Let the other players get on the field to play if someone is banged up. Those younger players have to get their experience sometime. It's obvious that some coaches consider it a competitive advantage to play fewer games before the playoffs begin and every team but one will lose along the way to Jerry's World.

I just disagree with Division 1 teams platooning or not playing both ways. 5 of our 6 guys start on both sides of the ball for us. I think even Gordon has 5 of their 6 guys starting on both sides of the ball. Injuries can happen to anybody no matter what. I think a lot of teams would rather just have the game experience for the kids more than anything.

I'm being serious with this question here, so please don't take it the wrong way.

If you think 2 BYE weeks would benefit your team, why not just build your schedule that way?

I'm an official, and every year, first week of October, I block my schedule -my wife and I take the week and go on an anniversary trip somewhere. It's great because it gives my body and mind time to rest and recharge away from football - the season takes a toll on us too, and we ain't getting any younger.

I personally think around that time would be a great time for every single team to have a bye week at the same time and let everybody rest up, get caught up, and just get a short mental break. Won't ever happen, but doesn't mean I don't think it's not a good idea.

We played 5/6 both ways sophomore through senior year. Never left the field on offense/defense/ and special teams. We never got tired. Only time we went out was if we had a lead and let the younger guys go in and get some playing time. Yet none of us wanted to leave the field.
Some the guys I went to school with claimed that football was the only reason they went to school for. They weren't joking when they said it. Their grades reflected their convictions. So having fewer games scheduled would have not been a good option for the coach. We didn't start school until after Labor Day, so we were more than ready for football practice to start in late August.

It’s a valid question coach, I’d say because it’s only a benefit if everyone is doing it, you can’t make up lost game time.

That’s exactly right, kids don’t want to come off. Even when they need to. I think many are misunderstanding why this would be beneficial for everyone. No one wants less but I do believe less is necessary.

More than anything just stirring up some thought for others to chew on. I’m not drafting a UIL by-law or anything! Just curious, something I pondered lately. Just a rough go of health this year, I suppose.

We didn't NEED to come off lol. Had 9 games my senior year. Begged and Begged for our coach to find another game. Thats why I disagree with you. We wanted 10 games but Fort Elliot forfeited the season. There's no such thing as "fatigue injuries". We were never fatigued nor injured. 9-12, we had one legitimate injury. 9th-17 players, 10th-12 players, 11th- 14 players, 12th- 13 players. Less games are not necessary
