This doesn't look good

AUSTIN, Texas —The State Executive Committee of the University Interscholastic League will convene at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 at the UIL Office in Austin for a hearing that may impact the UIL football postseason.

A schedule of tomorrow’s hearing follows:

10:00 a.m. Veribest High School: Appeal of District 13-1A Division I Executive Committee Decision Regarding Alleged Violation of Section 1206(d), School Off-Season Workouts, In-School Day Period of the UIL Constitution & Contest Rules, and Alleged Violation of Enrollment Requirements, Athletic Periods of the TEA-UIL Side by Side.

This emergency hearing is necessary because the outcome may impact upcoming playoff games.

Fascinating hearing. Strange plot and violation. This all basically stems from the dismissal of a coach in October and what transpired in the next 24 hours. I just went on a tweetstorm about it.

Paul Harris from San Angelo will have a story tonight

Wow, that's crazy! Although it is impossible to know if the coach should have been terminated or not, that is below bush league for him to turn Veribest into the UIL for such petty a violation of the rules. I am sure he will get another job, but I personally would never hire him for doing that. The UIL should have taken action, but I don't understand why they feel the need to decide the outcome of games. A very minor offense deserves a a very minor punishment, maybe like the probation thing.

The former Veribest Coach and the UIL both did the Falcons a disservice. For what it's worth, I, a guy that likes sixman football with no power, feel for Veribest. While I wouldn't want it to happen to anyone, I wish it hadn't happened to Veribest as they have never been very good in football to the point that many people forget about them. Beating one of the San Angelo "powerhouses" is an impressive feat that the Falcons should be proud of even if the UIL refuses to recognize it. I hope Robert Lee goes far as it will make Veribest look even better.

It was actually the DEC (that's made up of the schools in the district) that put the penalty of forfeit on veribest. The SEC (UIL) only upheld the decision by the DEC ( and I guess added probation, since the veribest admin were unprepared with plans for the future)

Lol, I guess this is another downside to 4 team districts; While I feel like Eden and Paint Rock made the wrong decision, it's hard to blame Robert Lee.

its a 5 team district.. RL and Veribest didn't vote at the meeting.. I think it was a 2-1 decision.. not sure who voted which way (you should do some looking up before you go on your anti-uil rants)

Sorry, the newspaper article only mentioned four teams. I will not apologize for being anti-bureaucrats, especially when they should have overturned the decision.

Im not sure why they should have overturned the decision.. a rule was broken that obviously benefitted veribest in their game with RL that night

On a Thursday night (Oct 10) they relieved their head coach of his duties. The Supt and Principal then notified the then-assistant coach he was now the head coach, while at a JH game.

Having limited time on the offense, he asked if he could get the kids some extra time on Friday to make sure they all knew the offense (the fired head coach was supposedly in charge of all offensive duties).

On Friday, the players' and coaches' schedules were moved around (not a violation) but they were also excused from some of their academic time to be in extra athletics (a UIL and TEA violation). Whether this was 15 minutes or an hour, it was admitted to.

I will tell you why they should have overturned, and when I say overturn I mean give Veribest back their win (putting them on prohibition is fine) the decision:

1. Common Sense: Using your logic, someone that took a cell phone from a stranger to call for help because they or someone else was dying committed theft or a woman who shot a large man that was trying to rape her committed murder? Heck, there was a Supreme Court Case that came up during Neil Gorsuch's confirmation hearing up about an ice trucker who got fired because he left his truck, which was against company policy, because he broke down and he might have died out in -20 degree cold. Although I am not the biggest Al Franken fan, I thought he made a good point that Gorsuch should not have voted to allow the company to fire the guy.

I would put Veribest's situation on par with the situations illustrated in this paragraph. Therefore, you are saying the guy that "stole" the phone should get life in prison? The woman that "murdered" the man that tried to rape her should get the death penalty? The truck driver should get fired for "abandoning his truck" in order to save his life? Sorry, I simply disagree with that conclusion.

2. What they actually did: I don't care what the UIL calls it, it was NOT an off-season workout. Rather, they got out of class for less than hour to walk through plays. I would be more liking to agree if they put on pads on.

Have you ever taught before? Kids get out of class for the dumbest reasons. At a school like Veribest, the county stock show would shut the school down. At little schools, many times the teacher takes the students outside for class. What if one of the teachers, who wasn't a coach, walked through plays with the students? What if walking through the plays, in the opinion of an expert in their field, helped the students remember historical dates, analyze literary texts, solve math problems, and/or balance equations? Not worrying about what they are going to do during a football game probably would help the students learn. It gets a bit more dicey if any of the teachers had a problem with it and then administrators forced them to do it.

3. The source of the complaint: Taking away Veribest's win rewards a Soviet-like mentality, IE: ratting on a former employer, because it will embolden future behavior. I just can't imagine doing that to students that you spent a lot of time with, even if the firing was not justified. As complicated as the rules are, I am sure everyone violates rules unintentionally at some point in time. Are we going to let the actions of adults decide the results on the field? Maybe instead of playing sports, the students could get a rule book out and figure out if the other team has violated any of the rules.

Heck, I got another situation for you: a team wore silver jerseys at home in basketball for years until another team got the rule book and pointed out that it says you have to wear white jerseys at home. Should the team wearing silver jerseys have to forfeit all their games because they violated a rule? What if a kid on the other team had a phobia of silver? It gave them an "unfair" advantage!

Hmm...I wonder if all the Robert Lee kids had their mouth pieces in every play? Maybe they were too close to the field? I think even you, Mr. Pistol, catch my drift.

4. What do you want the Veribest kids to do? What if the Veribest kids did not want to practice and the adults made them? Why would you punish a kid for the mistake of an adult? Did the Veribest kids fire the first coach? The Veribest kids, the ones who beat Robert Lee, did not have the power to stop the practice even if they wanted to.

I guess the real question is how you could support a decision like this.

That’s a very long winded response with a lot of very apples and oranges theories (also towards the end it sounds as if you are saying because all rules aren’t followed at all times it’s ok to break rules)
btw.. the rule that was broken is rule that every coach and or admin should have known

But I’ll ask you this— do you think veribest gained an advantage for their game that night by walking through their offense during school (outside of the athletic period) .. the DEC felt yes and at that point the rl kids are the ones getting cheated as well

I think you need to work on your reading comprehension because I NEVER said breaking the rules was okay; Rather, I said the punishment did not fit the crime in this case.

I think it helped overcome an advantage Robert Lee gained when Veribest fired their coach. Causation is tricky thing and is open to interpretation.

Remember the Calvert situation in 2015? It's on d2 dist.16 topics. The adults were punished but not the kids. UIL is getting mean in their old age!

It’s not against uil rules to change coaches middle of the season.. it is against uil/tea rules to pull from classes for practice
So your last statement makes absolutely no sense
