The winner of the BC/Valley game has a TOUGH row to hoe. Happy and the winner of the Crowell/Sterling City game loom on the horizon. it's going to take dang near perfect execution to get through that.

Borden County FINALLY gets over the Valley hump (- Bret Tyler) is the reason why BC wins over Valley.
COACHING PLAYS A HUGE PART IN THIS RIVALRY and the BC Coach is a darn good one, but he or very few can match wits with Coach Tyler.

Garden City and Hermleigh, I believe Hermleigh gets the win and they keep riding that historic victory train for another week.

The best game on the menu is Crowell vs. Sterling City.
Coach Tyler has a LONG history of playing Crowell every year and has managed to put up alot of points vs that very stingy Crowell defense. IF anyone can exploit weakness it's Coach Tyler and with Crowell coming in with 3 losses (to top teams), The Wildcats were exposed.
Will Sterling City have enough to go 4 qtrs with the Crowell Wildcats.

I forgot why I was on here, but now I remember. THE STATE PICKS

uil - 2015-16 THIS YEAR IS THE YEAR OF THE COYOTES (BC & RS)
1. Borden County COYOTES, I just believe this team is THE BEST IN 6 MAN THIS YEAR. They will have a very tough road to travel, but I see BC winning it all
2. Richland Springs COYOTES will defeat Jonesboro next week and that will send them to YET ANOTHER state title.
The Jonesboro vs Richland Springs game over Thanksgiving week will be one for the 6 man ages.

I really don't know ANYTHING about tcal, tcaf, taiao so I'll leave that up to the 6 man gurus. I don't want to humiliate myself.

I don't have a clue. It's easy to trim it to three best in each division, from there I would be shooting in the dark. But here is how I read it.

D-2:
Calvert has the most athletes. They now can execute the spread, but rarely do. Play caller is a player. They don't Pitch Pass which means a good rush will get to them often. They are senior heavy. They skip too much practice time. Have deep problem with PATs.

RS is coached second to none. They do everything needed on both sides of the ball. Strong PATs. Strong at running back. They are young, mostly.

Jonesboro has brutal physicality. Strong fundamentals. Strong rush, but slow vs Zephyr and Milford. Problem PAT on occasion. Good coaching. No Pitch Pass so a good rush will disrupt their comfort level.

D-1:
Happy has brutal physicality. Can do anything offensively. Defense is best its ever been. Good coaching.

BC has longest established coach and program. Strong both sides of ball. Coach's kid coaches on field. All I know. Are they young? PAT? Can they defend the edges? Did I say clearly good coaching.

Crowell has best recent tradition. Played tough thru injuries. Three losses either made or broke them. Best QB in D-1. Good coaching. Strong both sides of ball. PAT good. Experienced.

Looks like these games will come down to coaching and PATs. And who has and handles the rush best.
We should learn more about football dynamics in the next four weeks than at any other time since 1999.
Be at these games sober and taking mental notes. I feel for you (: suckers :) who have to attend basketball games.

Ware (Calvert coach) did tell me they don't touch the practice field on Monday's, it was game film scout sessions with team and private meetings with 7, 16 for offense and 12, 7 for defense.
How he went on to say this group of kids believes in game film scouting
Guess that sums up how High Island scored 38 cause they were given Monday and Tuesday off after the Crowell game

Brings up the question how many coaches do no Monday practice or a day off of practice.

I guess with beating 6 teams that are still in the playoffs in their league affiliation something is working.

Coach ethridge, u may need to take that Nueces Canyon job and schedule Calvert since they have alot of LAZY like weakness (that you don't agree with) and once you beat Calvert (ware) you could show him how it's REALLY done.

There has been teams win with BAD PATs, Calvert 2001 comes to mind and the Motley County team as well.

As far as the best athletes, I've always heard Calvert could win that category every year and every year since 2001 they've come up on the losing end with those so-called-athletes.

Can anyone tell me the last time a calvert team since 2001 has been 11-0.

Im sorta thinking Coach Ware has his hands on the steering wheel more than you may believe BE.
Just my assumption

I only come up with 5 not 6 that calvert has beaten that is still alive.

Sorry about that. I'll go back and edit it.

There is only one reason to skip a practice day...the kids are exhausted. Giving them rest can then prevent muscle injuries which we all know is like fighting bad guys with broken weapons.
I hope your right, but the truth will show against Jonesboro and RS (assuming they prevail). When a team has a successful PAT of less than 50%, no practice time should be skipped. At RS with Richie Daniels, that extra point team would be kicking 50 or 60 snaps on Saturday until it was fixed.

Truthfully, and Jerry will probably be pissed that I'm saying this. We had many Saturday practices when the next opponent was someone good like Rule, Throck', Strawn or Blum. And sweethearts, if you don't want to practice on Thanksgiving morning don't go to RS or Follett. Now they were not smash-mouth practices. Instead we had a good chalktalk to inform every player of his responsibilities that were key for us to win. Then we ran their best plays briefly, how we would stop them, and stressed what not to do the rest of the day as far as nutrition and rest. And we kicked. Same format on holidays.

I have heard coaches at district meetings laugh at the idea of practicing on Thanksgiving. I love to hear that. Me and Jerry use to grin at each other when that happened. It showed vividly how that coach probably had not taken the time and trouble to make his team as strong as possible. When you play a team who does those things, the last laugh is on that coach while he watches their collective butts kicked all the way to the gym, wondering "what happened!?" Then he takes comfort and deflects all accountability by telling his parents and administrators how stinkin great our "super athletes" were. Truth was we didn't have any super athletes.

In 2007 a top team drove to RS for a well anticipated early game. They were so good. When they got off the bus it looked like a college team. We were concerned. And then our kids, who were watching intently, started running around like a disturbed nest of wasps, you know when they are being excited by something nearby. We walked over to them and they pulled us into the field house and cheerfully informed us that the Happy parents and some of the players, and a coach, were talking about basketball. Our kids were stunned and energized by that and the rest was a shark feeding frenzy. Shelby sacked Kimberling, Tyler destroyed a sweep lead block and it was over after one series. They had a couple players who refused to give in. One stood out, the fullback, number 44 maybe, fought stubbornly the whole game.

Wonder dog, just by looking at the rankings one can assume a 11-0 start in 2002,2003,2004,2009. One can also guess that there one loss was put there by RS. Wonder dog I know a lot of people from Calvert and Facebook says it all. If you want to call out someone than you should place the blame on the players, because there the ones putting the information out there. Plus one player stated they didn't practice last Wednesday before there battle last Thursday. I like Calvert to win it all, because of those great athletes.

I think Milford will represent the East in Div- 1, don't think they have enough experience to get past a tough Happy team.

I did not pick a winner among those six teams. And I am the last person who would ever proclaim lack of on the field practice to be the only factor leading to a playoff loss. When a team, in six-man especially, has athletes who are allowed to think and problem solve on the field as Calvert does, great things can still happen. It is one of those dynamics I am speaking of. Most high school coaches don't welcome much of that. I didn't use much of Tyler's ideas during a game. Ask him. But during the week I did, we did. That is one of Jerry's hidden strengths...he listens for a better idea no matter where it comes from. Within reason. He probably wouldn't give much thought to an idea from folks outside the team. Do much of that and before long you'll be sitting up in the stands with them watching some other fellow coach.

In regards to Calvert, I'm going on what you guys have said and the people of Calvert have spoken. But I still have not counted them out. I merely mentioned the elements I believe could determine the outcome.
However, I will be paying attention, brothers, and other coaches would be wise to do the same. With that said, how many of us will ever coach a team with athletes like a Calvert, a 2004-2005 Throckmorton, or a 2004, 2006-2007 Richland. Not often. Those teams had either the best athletes or the best football players in six-man history.
No, Calvert doesn't always have the best athletes. Just the other night Oakwood had the best athlete on the field. Too bad he is a senior. In 2003, 2006-2007 and in 2010 RS had better athletes than Calvert. Maybe not as many. In six-man you only need two or three. In 1999 PC had arguably the best athletes and coach in Texas, but Gordon had Lyle, Chance Kite, Bo Johnson and Coach Campbell's spread.

I admire Coach Ware and the job he is doing. He has exemplified real piousness and humility which has made Calvert better. Not many coaches will allow the program of the past coach to carry forward. They wont do it. Jerry did when Clawson left. But he made improvements, too. Instead of using a single rusher, he expanded and added situations where two or maybe three can sic'em. It payed off against Calvert in 2003. When we realized the Trojans had picked up our one rush, Jerry starting mixing it up with two from different spots. Had we done that the year before, we would have moved on.

Let me add one more thing, and this is the most controversial thing one can say, but it is based on my experience and is honest.
Many times, not always though, when a team loses it is because one coaching staff got out coached. There are two kinds of out coached. One is when the teams are so similar in strength that it could go either way on paper. However, when the game progresses the losing coach makes some poor decisions and a loss results. So he is out coached during the game.
The other is when a coaching staff is out coached, out prepared all year long. Now that team will usually fly through the season winning all or most of their games until they collide with a team who has a superior program. The winning team does something all season, maybe even all year that makes them better than the losing team. Both those situations are examples of one staff being less prepared than another. If you have good players and they give 100% starting with two-a-days, they'll overcome most teams like them. But when they face a better talented team who do the same, they might lose. But take that same team and give them a staff who convinces them to do the summer program and they will overcome that team with more talent. Not every time, but the chances go way up. Do the summer program with a very talented team and they kick the crap out of all opposition. Want some examples? 1999 Gordon, 2004, 2006-2007 RS and probably many others like Strawn and BC and GC. Brett Tyler's Valley teams. My 2012 Follett playoff team and 2013 Follett until we ran into Grandfalls Royalty. And truth be known in both years we were most likely beaten by two teams who prepared all year more than us. I know RS did.

I have been out coached several times. Against Throckmorton in 2004 Danny Davis out coached me, not Jerry. In 2005 Throck beat us and I think our defense could have done better. In 2012 Jerry prepared better than me in the state championship. . He might disagree when I say we prepared better than Grandfalls in 2012, then Helms did a better job than I did in our 2013 semi-finals battle.

I just read all your post, wonderdog. Why would you assume I am saying Calvert is lazy. I have been told by Calvert fans that they have skipped a practice or two. In fact I know they have done that several times. Not saying it's because of laziness. But here is the deal...if they win the rest of the way no one will wonder about what if. If they don't win then many will wonder if missing practice was a contributing factor.

I like Calvert. Been impressed with their kids. Mentioned that on other posts. I hope my two boys grow up to be just like their players exemplify while on the field. I have talked to Quan every time after watching their games. They have some dandy young men on that team. When Quan was ejected from the Allen Academy game he took it like a grown man. That is not a typical response from high school or college kids.

As far as choosing a winner. I can say this: If Calvert plays like they did against Abbott, and half the Crowell game, they will win tomorrow. If they play like they did against Allen and half the Crowell game, they will not advance. They are playing a very tough Jonesboro team who has been very close to winning a state championship in the recent past, and are as hungry as any team I have seen in a long time. Had it not been for RS in 2012, and Calvert last year, they would have two state championships under their belts. Coach Gallegos and Jonesboro beat real good Zephyr and Milford teams. I would not be surprised if they win it all. It will take the best efforts of the year for any team to beat them. Early in the season I wasn't impressed with them. But every week they improved in huge ways. Did their PATs?
