Non-UIL players who can start on a UIL Team?

There is a middle ground here. Could A six-man kid play 5A football? Absolutely, Could 8 off of one team? Absolutely not. JO you are right about Hoskins, no doubt. There are plenty of others, Miles(Amherst), Peacock(Woodson), Booker(Trent). And that's without putting much thought into it. These guys not only would have played, they would have been studs. We had a kid here at Valley, Tyler Messer, on our JV as a soph., moved to Tascosa in Amarillo and started at LB his JR. and SR year. Here's one for you. Clay Brittan(Groom), started as a soph. QB for Groom, moved to Canyon Randall and was All-State DB as a JR. In my 13 years here at Valley I bet we've had about 7 or 8 kids, that could have made an impact on a 5A Team.

There are also a lot of big kids that are totally lost in the 6 man shuffle also that would excel at 11 man. My argument was against those that said the kids could step right over and play at some of the large premier programs in the state, i.e. stephenville. I did my student teaching/coaching there and I guarantee those kids have pushed more weight in the weight room by the time they are 8th graders than 90% of the seniors in the state. Completely different level than any 6 man program I have seen. I agree with you on the studs you mentioned, there are some kids that could play anything they wanted. Where did those kids end up going to play college ball?

I am curious as to the kid that was on your JV as a sophomore and then went and started for Palo Duro as a junior. Growth spurt? Hit the weights hard? Or was he more of a plugger, and not quick enough for the 6 man game? I just ask because I see a LOT of potential left on the table at a lot of programs. I coached powerlifting and was the offseason coordinator when I coached, so that is a big pet peeve of mine. Ive seen what a good lifting and conditioning program can do.

In my opinion, there are 3 and maybe 4 guys at Dallas Covenant that could start at most 5A schools in the Dallas area. They definitely have the speed, conditioning, desire and talent. The only negative might be size at some of the big 5A's. There is no question that they would start at most 4A schools in the state.

You cant make a statement that bold and ridiculous without giving names. What three or four players for Dallas Covenant could start on any 4A school in the state?

The kid that was on our JV(Messer 5'10 about 190) he was very good. Not really a growth spurt he was very strong though. We had 2 very good SR LB's that year. We expected very big things from him here. We were crushed when he moved. He would have been a STUD here at Valley. As for College for those guys: Miles went to West Texas(he is there all time leading rusher at WT if i'm not mistaken), Peacock not for sure about College but he played for the Arena Team in Odessa for a few years at WR. Booker ran Track at Texas Tech. Hoskins went the track route also(very impressive resume) maybe JO can help out with his accomplishments. The Brittan kid from Groom suffered a injury his SR year, that If i remember right hurt his chances to do anything At the next level. My first Coaching job was a t Marlin(had the secondary) anyway we scrimmaged Stephenville that year 94.

Thanks Coach weighing in. I appreciate the perspective and comments from first hand knowledge and experience.
I notice Coach T said he had had 7 or 8 kids in 13 years that could have made the grade in 5A. That's less than one player a year from a quality program, that believes in the off season, has good participation and has been and is a WINNING program in UIL DI.

Side note: Miles played his High School ball about 35 miles from my home town at that time. Never got to see him play. Regret that…

I did love to watch Mr. Hoskins play ...

Good luck to you Coach and the Patriots for the remainder of the season.

Thanks for the reply. I was at S'Ville at the very end of the 90s and then was at Copperas Cove for a few years after that. I looked up that Peacock kid and I believe he did high jump at SFA also. Interesting most of them went the track route. Ive said all along its a different game, and very difficult to make the transition, especially at the college level. I know when my brother played at ASU, they had a kid from Richland Springs I believe that played some safety for them, but thats the only one ive seen in person.

Very hard to make the transition, A LOT of hard work. Thanks JO I appreciate it. A few others, kid from Rule Dudensing Sp?, he started at FB for ACU. Mason Peirce from Patton Sp. played at ACU. St. Clair from Lazbuddie started at LB for WT at the same time Miles was there. They were the best kids on each side of the ball. St. Clair-Defense, Miles- O. We have the Hancock kid from Valley that is trying to play at WT, he is a Soph., WR plays just a little, but we have hopes here that he can make an impact in the next 2 years. But you guys are right I'm going back 15 years or so talking about players.

I remember some big boy from Trinidad I believe played at Baylor, Ford from Calvert I thought played somewhere, also there was a big kid from Ira, Graves I believe, who probably could of played anywhere because of his combination of size/athleticism. I think he was around 6'4 285 if I remember right. The Woods kid from Follett played at WT for awhile I believe. Also Atkins from Highland went to Tech for track.

1) Josh Hunt, Dallas Tyler Street, TAPPS D-2: left Tyler St after his junior year for Duncanville HS, was Dist 5-5A defensive MVP as OLB, now at Wake Forest on FB scholarship (also had offers from UNT & Colorado St)

on a smaller scale, but still relevant to this discussion............

2) Jonah Guedea, Dallas Lakehill, (was) TAPPS D-1: played but did not start at Lakehill as a freshman, did not play any football at all as a Soph. or Jr., now starting TE for Woodrow Wilson HS (4A) as a Sr.

There definitely is a gap between the two (6-man & 11-man), but it's not as wide as some of you make it out to be!
