Honoring Don

CowboyP

Six-man expert
I haven't posted much about Don, because I have been extremely upset about his death. I considered him a close friend, and talked to him via phone or text 2-5 days a week. If not for him, many of my projects would not exist. I know he had the same influence on several others. In my opinion, Don was the biggest proponent of sixman since Stephen Epler. For that reason, and countless others, I feel he should be honored.
Are there any teams willing to dedicate their season to his memory? Can the finals be dedicated to him?
If it were my choice, Don would be inducted into the Hall of Fame. I know a new category would need to be created, but don't we owe him that?

Agree on all points.

The state games should be played in his honor...and I feel that the whole 2013 six-man season should be played in his honor, announced at each kick off classic and home opener, maybe the coachs' association can do something to make something like that official, I will bring it up at the meeting in July.

To me he should be in their Hall of Fame, as I have said he was THE Ambassador for the game for many years now.

Snoopy - I have heard from several people who are suggesting setting up a scholarship in his name...the coaches' association does do things like that and I think if we just go to the coaches ans ask them, we can make that happen. That is one thing that needs to be brought up in Lubbock...

how about name the All-Star game after him???

I know Stephen Epler is in their Hall of Fame...even though they haven't put it up on their website...so that should set a precedence for people who were writers or ambassadors in some way

Don was a charter member of a group of us called The Six-Man Writers' Association, organized in December, and we are talking about making it a legit non-profit and creating end of season awards and I have thrown out the idea that the Defensive POY type award be called The Hardin Award...in my quests for six-man history and stats, Don always wanted to hear about defensive stats and accomplishments and himself played defense in HS at Luders-Avoca and in a Semi-Pro six-man league...he valued defensive players and stats very highly...that is why I think that type of award be named after him

oneday,

I agree with all you say. We need to get him in the Hall of Fame. I think the Hardin award would be an awesome asset to sixman football. I missed the meeting in December with the Sixman Writer's Association and now I am even more upset that I couldn't make it. I had talked to Don three days prior about making it to the lunch. I am working on stats from West Texas and he always wanted me to give him updates on stuff I got from Grandfalls, Sanderson, and those districts especially defensive stats.

I think that Honoring him with a Defensive award in his name would be amazing.

I like everything mentioned. The scholarship in Don's name would be great so the recipients would get the opportunity to know Don's contribution to the sport as the years go by.

I know someone already mentioned the all star game,
but what about the Don Hardin Texas Bowl?

Perhaps someone's new stadium?

All of your idea's sound great. What a way to honor Don during the State or All Star games. He was loved and liked by so many. I was also wondering about his family. No one is expected to pass at his age. I wonder if donations would help the family? If someone knows his wife personally could you see if she might need the help from this 6-man family?

All-On behalf of Don's family - we LOVE all of the ideas you have posted on this forum. In the obituary we asked that people donate to a charity of their choice. We would love to have a scholarship fund setup in his name or have people donate towards six-man football in some way. We just didn't know if there was such an organization. If you would like to wait until we can have time to setup some sort of memorial/scholarship fund, please feel free to do so. This just happened way too quickly for all of us and we were not prepared at all.

I cannot express how much all of your notes have meant to us during our grief. We are planning to put many of them on-screen at the visitation tomorrow because you all described my dad the way we also knew and loved him. We have asked Cowboy to speak at the service and we look forward to meeting him in person ourselves.

Thank you again for everything. We are fine financially, please save your money for a way to honor my dad in only the way that sixman football can do.

Don's daughter has post that they are financially sound, she suggest any donations be made after we have time to think on something or your personal favorite. I feel a scholarship in Don's name that would go on forever would be great. Also I suggest all 6 Man Teams wear a DH on their helmets next year...
