2026-2028 TAPPS Alignment

Bottom line is that TAPPS screwed the pooch with this move and once again has made a very narrow minded, poorly thought out decision to appease certain people. There is a much better way to have handled this and condensing the schedule and removing a round out of the playoffs isn’t it.

Id feel a little better about it if the changes were accross the board, but its just Football taking a hit. Basketball has no changes. I am not against making the playoffs more competitive, but there are better ways to go about it then ruining the experience for football. D2 and D1 its not that big of an issue 4 districts the top 2 go. D3 is getting the short end of this straw. If you want to cut out 3 or 4 seeds I can probably get behind that, but leaving a lot of teams sitting at home isnt the answer by any stretch of the imagination. Im curious who the "heard" from. I know my school had no input in this decision. I dont see why basketball couldnt be pushed back a week or 2 to make it work. This year we didnt get brackets or wildcard information until the week of district. That plays a big role now in scheduling if its going to be a battle for the other 2 spots.

Maybe give a 1st round by to district champs and have the 2's and better 3's duke it out to eliminate some of the blowout matchups round 1. Not to take shots but the competitve balance is already out of whack in several of the districts and this just helps those teams and hurts the competitive ones.

If you have wildcard points for all of the second place teams from Division III for this past year, this is how it would have played out:

Correct me if I'm missing something, but, if nothing changes, and this is the way forward, then the next step is to understand exactly what the playoffs look like so you know how to schedule - especially if wild card points are at play - before the UIL realignment is announced.

Yes which is usually a problem. We didint get that information until right before district started this year, and the begining of October the year before. If TAPPS gets on the ball that would help but im not expecting much on that front.

I can see the pros and cons of the decision however I do not agree that this decision will benefit the majority. I also think this will affect many students from participating in other activities during the fall season. For us, we have a lot of fine arts activities, local missions, and class trips that happen during the fall. We already struggle to work the season around these events and now with the condensed schedule, it will be near impossible. At the end of the day, it should be all about the kids and this decision will take opportunity away from the kids. All solutions for the overlap should be handled at the school level and not the governing level since everyone's situation is different.

Correct. The 8-team district raises some real concerns, especially if we’re capped at 9 games with no bye week. That puts us in a tough spot from both a scheduling and a player-health standpoint, and I’d really like to hear how that’s supposed to work. I understand TAPPS has a difficult job, and it’s not easy being in their shoes, but this setup creates some tough questions.

The potential playoff format makes it even more complicated. In our district alone, we’ve got at least three teams that should be contending in the South, and now they’ve added another district with only four teams. That creates a really uneven competitive picture, stronger districts fighting for one spot while a smaller district gets a much cleaner path.

I get that TAPPS is trying to make things better, but decisions like this make it hard to see how the balance is being maintained. This is why it’s important we get a clearer explanation of how these changes are supposed to help the overall structure.

Agreed!

player health is a big concern at the smaller schools. my son's school was out 6 kids for the season before district play even started this year. part of that was youth and part was playing teams we should not have been playing.

Having talked to some folks, it seems TAPPS didn’t poll every school for this, which I think is a mistake. This should have had more input because right now on the surface, it looks like they are placating to the basketball coaches.

If the calendar is labeled as Provisional, then it isn't final. So now you have the opportunity to reach out to any of the nine TAPPS executive board members and/or nine members of the Athletic Executive Committee to get/give some constructive feedback.

Completely agree Coach. Overall the staff does a great job and it’s a thankless job, but I honestly feel like they dropped the ball on this one.

bracket plan is much more informative. top four from each district will make the playoffs and be separated into large/small school divisions. did I read that correctly?

I think it really is two, if you do the math to the left. Six districts with two teams apiece and then add the four wildcards to get 16 and then split into two divisions. 8-4-2 teams, three weeks of playoffs. I'll have to ask, as I don't see it in the attachment, if the teams will be grouped by the enrollment numbers in the alignment document or if there will be updated snapshot numbers that help determine division placement.

the text reads "top four", but the math for top two adds up.
