Game of the Week – Week 4
Strawn (2-1) v Borden County (3-0) Friday @ Jayton 7:30pm
By: Leman Saunders

The biggest game this week should be without question the defending DI State Champion Borden County vs the defending DII State Champion Strawn. This is virtually a game between All-State teams as both rosters are loaded with talent!

Strawn had a bit of a speed bump in week one as they lost to a big powerful McLean team. However, the Greyhounds seem to have righted the ship as they defeated good DI programs in Gorman and Bryson via the mercy rule outscoring those two foes 125-13 in a total of four quarters of game play.
Players to watch: RB/LB Tanner Hodgkins, RB/DL Ivan Ruiz, QB/DB Carlos Villanueva, LB JW Montgomery

Borden County is sitting at 3-0 and are coming off a big win over a top 10 DI team in Knox City 64-15. The Coyotes are coming into this game a little banged up, but the depth chart didn’t seem to hurt them last week, but Strawn’s overall team speed is a notch or two above that of Knox City’s.
Players to watch: FB/DL Ben Justice, RB/DB Peyton Merket, OL/DE JW Nix, RB/K/CB Cam Edwards

Keys to the Game:
Offensively Strawn needs to spread the field out by working the edges and find the spaces in between Borden County’s stellar zone defense. On defense the Greyhounds will need to keep the Coyote receivers in front of them and force 3rd and 4th and longs by snuffing out the run game before running lanes develop.

Borden County will need to be themselves. That being physical up front and using their size advantage to control both the offensive and defensive line of scrimmages. They need to bottle up the Strawn backs in the backfield and on offense they need to just keep those chains moving.

My thoughts:
It should be a fun game in Jayton! I feel like while Borden County has more size, Strawn’s speed off the edges and in the secondary and first steps on offense will give them a bigger edge in this game. The Greyhounds are also playing with a chip on their shoulder after losing in week one in Jayton to a powerful DI team McLean (now pretty much the consensus DI #1 team thanks to that win). Add to it all that Borden County seems to be a bit banged up while Strawn seems to be 100%. Ball security may be an issue tonight as well so winning the turnover battle is key. I think Borden County will control the game for the first half, but Strawn will pull ahead late in the game and end Borden County’s 31 game win streak. Strawn by 9.
