2015 State Championships

Has anybody heard any talk or rumors of where the state championship games will be held this year? With all of the other title games moving to Houston for one year is it possible the six-man games could be back at Shotwell?

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong here but I think the last thing I saw (sorry can't remember where I saw said article) stated that they were going to keep all the title games together still.

I emailed the writer at the Dallas Morning News who covers high school football and he said that the deal for games in Houston only covers 2A-6A.

The Dallas morning news reported that Houston would not be able to get the field ready for the 6-Man championship.

The two six-man championships — played a week earlier — might still be held in AT&T Stadium. Justin White, the executive sales manager at NRG Stadium, said his facility would be unable to host those two games because of a Houston Texans home game on Sunday, Dec. 13. While NRG Stadium has a temporary artificial surface that rolls out for high school games, the venue has never attempted a short turnaround between its turf and grass fields.

I've never played, or coached, in a 6-man Championship, but if we're back to square one, and all on our own, why wouldn't we play on a 6-man field; if NRG and Cowboys Stadium are truly out. Seems like Zephyr, Robert Lee, Blackwell and Trent all offer excellent, and centrally located, stadium choices. If we're unable to play at the same stadium as 2A-6A any way, it would seem to be counter-productive not to offer all our support and financial backing to a 6-man community, rather than continually spend our money and efforts trying to get 11-man schools to convert. I'm not saying to abandon the efforts of attaining the proper respect for our culture, but if we're not going to the same place; why go into a huge 11-man stadium, when the selling point of our sport is doing more with less?

Also, why should the state title game be played in Houston when there are so few schools in that part of the state? Think of the drive a school like Follett or Balmorhea would have! It also would be stupid for any 2A/3A/4A/5A/6A school in the panhandle or Far West to drive there...

There's not a 6-man facility that has the seating capacity to host a 6-man state championship game. OBK would have this knowledge I'm sure, but when was the last time a state championship was played in a 6-man stadium - and how many times since '72? Just curious.

You knew in the back of your mind that Jones wasn't going to put up with a football game that filled 15% of his stadium. I hope we will be allowed to make our own decisions from now on. If so there is one venue that fits our game perfectly...Shotwell Stadium in Abilene. Everything else is second best.

We made a bad mistake in 07 playing Rule in San Angelo...terrible atmosphere. Follett vs. Strawn in 08 in Lubbock seemed more like a junior varsity game compared to all the ones I have been to. Well, actually, the 97 game in Abilene Wiley was not very exciting. There is no place that has the atmosphere and cordiality of the people and facilities that Shotwell provides. And there are a sheet load of sixman followers in the Abilene area. Good attendance.

Just my biased opinion.

correct me if I am wrong but i do believe that in 2013 the 6man state games had a bigger turn out at Cowboy Stadium than the 1a 11man games. i thought it was amazing for the kids to be in the same locker room and field as the pros.

Read this morning in the paper that six man secured AT&T in Lubbock and that the UIL has placed 6A through 1A at Longhorn Field in Darrouzett. Folks up there have to tweak the field for the crowded field game but that is never a problem.

The piece contained a brilliant quote from one of the coaches at Allen complaining about the possible drive up the panhandle to which a quick witted reporter stated that Darrouzett's field was in much better condition than Allen's... ;)

Well that sucks going from Cowboy stadium to shotwell. I mean why play state at shotwell where you can play at anytime? Why not try to get the state game at Jones AT&T stadium in Lubbock? What would it take to get the state game played there?

I hope you mean Dec 12th. It would be weird to play state champ games on a Monday.

And the guy who posted that was probably a 12 year-old. The fact that he said a stadium voted against having the games should have been a clue.
