Tales of a traveling man

It's a ditch or "barrow" along a a road dug for drainge purposes. My guess is people walking or riding a horse or mule along one home from a bar sometimes woke up in one the next morning.
A mystery Wickpedia couldn't totally solve.

Fajita's hog story reminds me of when i was a little kid. My mom hits a deer , im 7 at the time and freaking out . The dps trooper pulls up ...... And i told on my mom .... She recalls me saying " officer my mommy killed bamby".

It was called a barrow ditch and was shortened to bar ditch.

The slang term bar ditch supposedly comes from barrow ditch when hand labor and wheelbarrows were used to haul dirt dug from a ditch and dumped into the roadbed to raise it above the surrounding terrain. Another version states dirt borrowed from a ditch and placed on the roadbed gave birth to the term bar ditch.

So they had a bar tender that toted booze around in a wheelbarrow that fell in the ditch???
