"Play-Off Bound
Contributed Coach David Garcia
It was all but calm after the game in Rochelle. Zephyr defeated Rochelle by more than 20 points causing an automatic coin flip to determine who would represent the district in the play-offs and who would be #1 & #2 in the district.
While all Rochelle, Zephyr and Santa Anna all ended with similar records, only two teams could advance into the first round of the play-offs. After the game, coaches from all three schools met in the middle of the field with fans surrounding the two goal lines and the home side line waiting for the results. When the coins landed, Zephyr and Santa Anna coins landed on heads and Rochelle's coin landed on tails and eliminating them from the play-off picture.
"It is just a bad way to not be in the play-offs. They (Rochelle) deserve to be in the play-offs just as much as we do," stated Coach Norris. Norris later approached the Santa Anna Football team and said we need to play not just ourselves but for Rochelle as well. Rochelle's Coach Phillips wished the best of luck to the Mountaineers as they head into the play-offs.
"I have never been a part of anything like that. I just saw all the fans surrounding the field, and it just felt amazing. I heard the Zephyr coach say heads, I said heads because I was near our coin, and Rochelle's coin landed on tails. I looked at our players and they knew right away we had advanced," said Coach Garcia
The Mountaineers will now travel to May on Friday to take on Lingleville. The game is set to kick off at 7:30pm. Santa Anna is the visiting team for this game.
The Santa Anna Mountaineers would like to wish the best of luck to the Zephyr Bulldogs who will be facing Gordon on Friday as well. The Mountaineers would also like to congratulate the Rochelle Hornets on a tremendous season.
Editor's Note: According to KOXE radio and sixmanfootball.com the Zephyr/Gordon game is on Saturday at 7:30 PM at Hico."
