Oglesby and the playoffs

I know that Oglesby hasn't won a playoff game since I believe the 1984 season but in that season did they also win district or not? I'm trying to figure out the last time this town won district in football and was curious to see if anybody had the answer since we will win it with a victory Friday night?

It was 1983, and yes that was the last time they took a district championship. Got all the way to the semi finals before Mozelle beat them.

Oglesby had a very good spread back in Tommy Purcell in 1983. Ray Martin was the coach. I played for Buckholts at the time and we lost a very close game to Oglesby that year. Oglesby had a good playoff run but was knocked out by Mozelle. You can find all the playoff History on the TSMCA website.

I know Oglesby was in the playoffs in 1994 as well. They kicked a drop kick field goal to beat Buckholts to get in that year. I believe they were runner up to Jonesboro that year.

If you're interested, there are a lot of game write-ups from that '83 (12-1) team on lonestarfootball.net
Click on the link below (even though it says 2013 at the top look on down and it is the 1983 season).
Every game that has an i (additional information) at the far right, move your curser to the i and left click.
Game write-ups from the Gatesville Messenger. Someone, (most likely OBK) devoted a lot of time to this project.

Yesterday's Gatesville Messenger said Oglesby was trying to win their first district championship in 17 years.
Don't know where they got that information.

and those are free online archives.. Oglesby/Jonesborro/Turnersville were all part of Gatesvilles reporting area.... I believe the electronic version goes back to 55. You can also go to the office anytime and review the older paper archives. They have them in full sheet binded books.

At one time the Gatesville Messenger had every issue in the 80's, 90's and 2000's in the Archive. I don't know why they are not there now. The same for the Levelland paper (look at Whit, Ropes and Smyer from that time.

Here's the Messenger write up for that game:
Oglesby 40 - Buckholts 35
OGLESBY CLEARED what might have been its last major hurdle in the '83 championship path when the Tigers held off air-minded Buckholts, 40-35, before a record homecoming crowd at Oglesby Saturday night. Although the Badgers strafed the Oglesby secondary tor five touchdowns, they couldn't keep pace with the Tigers' super passer-runner-kicker, Tommy Pursell, who had a hand in all the Oglesby scoring as he quickly fired the Bengals to a two touchdown lead and kept them in front all the way. Pursell rushed for an astounding 317 yards and three touchdowns, and hit on 19 of 26 passes for 194 yards and three other scores. He also rang up four points with PAT kicks. FANS WERE still pouring in at Tiger Field when Pursell threaded his way through the Badgers for a 42-yard touchdown. Minutes later he passed to Danny Balderas for a 6-yard touchdown. Buckholts took to the air; and closed to 12-6 before the first period ended. Each team scored twice in the second quarter, with Oglesby's TDs coming on a 63-yard bolt by Pursell and another Pursell-to-Balderas aerial, this one covering 11 yards. It was 26-20 at half time. In the third quarter Pursell nailed Robert Adkins with a 12-yard TD pass to provide the Tigers with 34-20 breathing space. The Badgers struck right back, and it was 34-28 going into the last quarter. Pursell made it 40-28 with a 30-yard gallop, but the Badgers had the partisan throng biting its nails by notching another seven points to pull within five of Oglesby with four minutes left. Oglesby made the margin stand up with a clock-eating drive, rumbling to the Buckholts 10 before running out of downs with just five seconds left. In addition to Balderas' two touchdown catches, Adkins latched on to seven passes for 94 yards, Kent Lynch caught three for 53 yards, and Stacy Standridge hauled in six for 31 yards and some vital first downs. "Our pass defense smelled up the place," Martin said with a wry smile after the game. "We hope to have it all worked out before we go to Jonesboro.
