New 6 Man Kickoff rules

Let’s brainstorm some kick off rules.
I watched 3 games today. 11 am-3 pm and 7 pm and saw the offenses start with the ball at the 40 nearly every possession.

Currently the only advantage of kicking the ball into the endzone for a touch back is the offense starting at 20. If you attempt an onside they start at 30 with an opportunity to get ball back.

What are some options to reward a team for kicking off a touchback and actually make the offensive team have to put a drive together,
Vs just onside it and take the 10 yard differential.

Random thoughts.

Kickoff goes for touch back. Receiving Team starts on 15. Kickoff attempt goes out of bounds past the 20 the ball starts on the 20.

How do you reward a good kicking game and putting effort into it, to warrant impacting the game. Extra points are vital and coaches spend time addressing it. But the ease of just conceding to the let’s just onside it cause it only makes a 10 yard impact.

Im Just curious what folks see as other options or if it’s the beauty of the game.

Personally I'm over onsides in six man. Constantly dangerous. So many kids get hurt. A large percentage of my injuries over the years always end up happening on the onside kick. Whether it be us kicking or receiving. Id be very much in favor of adapting the NFLs landing zone kick.

I’m a fan, not a coach. Friday night WV and RL started on 25 on touchbacks. The nfl is trying to outlaw kickoffs, it seems with new rules, I hear, because I don’t watch enough pro to really know. I, personally, like your random thoughts. A reward for the strong leg as it seems that there are about as many ran back for a TD as turnovers on onside kicks. On the positive for onside, there was a team a couple of years ago, that recovered 27 onside kicks in 10 games. I will still be at as many games as I’m able no matter what happens on kickoffs.

I liked the old school. Kickoff hits in field of play then goes into end zone, live ball. Receiving team has to recover ball and down it in end zone (brought out to 20 yard line) or they can attempt to run it out. Kickoff team can recover ball in end zone for TD.

I like the idea of starting on the 15 for a touch back. I think you'd see a lot more deep kicks if that was the case.

I support this idea in all levels of football.

After touchdown start all drives at the 20. Saves time and injuries.
And then the name could be changed from Football to Handball or Slingball or Oblongball or?? Just kidding. No, the danger on the kickoffs is from the blocking. In my opinion a block on the kickoff should be only with the hands and between the waist and the neck.

No... The danger is onsiding it to someone on the line of scrimmage and flying at them 20 mph and throwing your body into them trying to get the ball

If we are worried about contact then we should band the spread formation (which I'd be perfectly fine with) and make interceptions dead balls and spot them at point of interception 🙄

Agreed - blocking isn't the problem, the tackling is dangerous, particularly when a player is defenseless in the act of recovery on the ground and usually can't see what is coming to protect themselves.

I like the idea of the ball being on the 15 for touchbacks. I'd also add, since many six many kickers are not great at kicking the ball deep, that if a free kick goes out of bounds behind the 15, it is simply a spot+5 penalty, without the option to push the kicking team back and rekick, and if it goes OOB ahead of the 15, no foul at all, play it where it goes out.

Would love to see UIL/Coaches association make some changes like this. Coaches will be the ones who have to drive it and support it.

After the touchbacks, those drives should have started at the 20, not the 25.
