Hiring process of sixman schools

I'm curious to get some superintendents, principals, and athletic directors opinions on the hiring process in sixman. I'm curious on why the head coaching positions open later (on average) than they do in 11man. Why do you think this is? Resources? Why are more coaches not hired in the spring to allow them to implement their systems? I realize jobs or very domino oriented (wait on 1 or 2 to fall before the rest follow) but what is the delay? It is semi-rare to see a sixman coach hired for a job before the school year finishes.

HAHA!! I am not the statistician that you are. I would call it a general observation. Watching this website and when coaches are hired and comparing it to the THSCA site and being in the loop of when those coaches are hired. I would say that it is common practice in 11man to have your head coach hired midway through track season and at the very latest before school was out so he could meet with the kids about the summer program. I am just not sure why 6man schools don't do this. My guess would be the unwillingness to pay one coach off and hire another one on. In sixman I have only seen a coach hired while paying the other one off once personally. I am sure that its more prevalent than that but sure wouldn't say its common practice for them to come in during that spring to start implementing like it is in 11man.

To me it's pretty simple. In an 11-man school, you seldom see the offensive or the defensive coordinator, much less a positional coach leaving during the spring. The same can be said for most of the HC's in 6-man; and they all have one thing in common - They teach! In most 11-man schools, the AD/Head Football Coach is no longer in the classroom, so if they leave, the student's education is not at risk. In 6-man, and everyone else who isn't the AD/HC at an 11-man school, we need to stay in our classrooms to finish out state testing, which takes place in April/May. Most all of us know this, respect this, and if we're true educators, prefer this so we can give our students the best chance to pass as possible. But on a personal note; how do you leave your Seniors before graduation? I've never understood that philosophy. "Buy into my program, but I won't be there to support you on your biggest day."

Another way to look at it, is what are you implementing in the spring anyway? We don't have spring practice, and many of our students are wrapped up in track, baseball, tennis and/or golf until April/May. So really, the only things you would be implementing is off-season workouts and policies/procedures. Only so much you can fit on the chalk board, and mingle in during a 50 minute class, which also requires weights and conditioning.

Fair point on the coaches being teachers. In my experience the seniors I left were happy for me and my family moving on to a new adventure. Thaye knew if they needed me i was a phone call away. I also made a point to travel back and see their graduation.
Let's be honest though if you don't have a baseball team you aren't doing much in may. Most track athletes are done by the end of April. That gives you a month to do football in the period. Most importantly it gives you time to instill your culture and build your relationships with those kids.

That would be a good indication that you are not in the right profession.
Haha. I was afraid that's the way it would come off. They were genuinely happy for me to get a chance at bigger school or a promotion. Things like that. Now I'm sure some won't miss me but my relationship with my kids is what I build my program around.

The hiring process is different at different schools. Man, there are so many differences that hiring in June is the least of it. The idiosyncrasies are rarely discussed. It is what it is and we make the best of it and things usually work out.

Thanks for getting this back on track. I figured there were reasons, just curious to what they might be. Satcher brought up what seems to be the obvious that I overlooked in teaching. Being a co.posite science guy that should have hit me in the face. Just curious to what else might be contributing factors.

For Class 1A schools, money makes many decisions. Most all schools would like a championship but may not be able to pay the costs involved.

That is the best answer I have ever read on this board!! The school year doesn't end when football season ends. Coaches sign a contract for a school year and should stay at the school and finish out the contract. Plus, even if the Head Coach is able to leave it causes disruption to all the spring sports and extra work for the coaches still there.

You would not want your players to not finish the job!!!!
