End of the Garden City Texas Bowl

11-man fan
I want to let everyone on this board know that we will no longer be putting on the Texas Bowl football game or the Small School Shootout basketball game.

On behalf of the directors for the last ten years, Ken Hoskins, Alonzo Garcia and myself, we would like to thank several groups who helped make it a great game that enjoyed a good run:

GC Staff (past and present) - Steve Long, Matt Odom, Vance Jones, Joseph Sanchez and Darrell Hunt
GC Community - you were a great host to the rest of the state
Coaches across the state - thanks for helping us find deserving kids, helping to get them here and supporting the game
Fans - Always cool to watch the loyal fans make the trek to GC to support their hometown kids one more time
Coaches who coached - giving up part of your summer to work with kids from across the state was amazing
Kids who played - we hope you had a good experience, hope you made some new friends and made some good memories.

Unless you've tried to do it, you would never understand how much goes into a project such as this. We had wonderful sponsors, community support, coaching support and great turnouts. Usually even decent weather! It was a lot of fun.

Thanks again

Koby Abney

Thanks for putting on such a great thing for the kids, because that's what it is all about! I hope someone steps up and take over the bowl game. I know how much work has to go in it, especially doing the CanAm Bowl the last several years.

Thanks, guys for your hard work ... for nothing other than the opportunity to help these young men and women celebrate their high school athletic accomplishments. I'm sure my dear departed Irish mother's old saying, "Your reward will be in Heaven, because you certainly aren't going to get it here" applies to this situation.

The hard work that the players and coaches go through to make a Friday night high school game ... or a summer all-star game ... is certainly the reason we attend and support our teams and schools.

But there is a whole group of people who work hard to help support their efforts and give them the opportunity to play on Friday nights. The guys who get the field in shape. Folks who drive the bus or the caravan of cars to the game. Cheerleaders, drill teams, and bands (even if it's one guy with a trumpet and another with a drum). Officials. The folks you cajole into working the chains. Moms and Dads in the concessions stand, selling tickets, supervising parking. The folks who collect and wash the uniforms and all the gear after the game (and boy, do they stink; by the way OxyClean is a great invention and I just went to Costco today and forgot to buy the stuff). Stats people, clock operators, announcers.

And at a lot of our schools, you get to wear many of those hats.

Thanks to those folks who make the Friday night experience for our kids and our fans.

Thank you to all of the coaches & the GC community for hosting the event. My intro to Texas 6-man football was when it was still TX vs. the World. I never had a player who played in either the football or basketball game who didn't have a great experience. I'm sad to see it go, but I can only imagine what it takes to host such an event.

I Would like to keep this Bowl going. I have spoken to Zephyr and they have agreed to let us use their facilities. I will take the reponsibility in making this game happen. I will get with the right people to make sure this is a success.

Thanks

Coach Burkhart
