Dandy Don

For those old enough to remember it truly is a sad day for Texas football. As a kid in the late 60's, North East of Fort Worth, he was my biggest football hero. He turned looser's into winners by leading them, playing hurt with broken ribs, a shoulder blade, and nose among other injuries at times. He played through the boo's for his mistakes and those of many others. He led the league in passing, was it's MVP and led his team to within a TD of the NFL Championship in back to back years, against what some consider the greatest team in NFL history. And he never got too big to laugh at himself.
Then America fell in love with him on MNF.
Though I never had the privilege or honor to meet him I feel empty inside today.
Thanks for the memories, Sir. God Bless you and yours.

If your ever passing Mt Vernon on the Interstate the museum there is well worth the time to stop for.

If you've never read it, I highly recommend Walt Garrison's book "Once A Cowboy." There are some great stories about that era of Cowboys in it.

OFB Thank You. A few years back I tried to get this book, it was out of print & they wanted
30-40 bucks for it if I remember right and I passed. Bought it the other day for $8 plus shipping - used copy in great condition. Read it back in about 90'. A guy came into my work &
gave me his card for an address, he was a facillites manager at Texas Stadium & loaned it to me.
I've told several people over the years about the story of Mr. "Joe Don" giving Mr. Garrison the nickname of Puddin. The chapter on Meredith is special. It's the funniest sports book I've ever read. Hope Dandy Don thought it's been a good un right up till the last.
