Also you would run into the issue they had in the 1970s...the 8man districts would be geographical travel monsters, and probably some 6man districts as well.

Add Fort Elliot, they should be playing football but their supe and school board are completely against it. Know some guys there that want football back immediately but doubt it happens. Sure would help the panhandle teams.
Well... kind of running into the same problem with 6man now. Yes there's 2 divisions but teams can cherrypick schedules, multiple cancellations/forfeits, and travel has been a problem. It's a lot harder to get a full schedule nowadays than it was in the early 2000s. Biased but I thought the 8 team districts were awesome and should be like that, granted we have 2 divisions now so that won't happen again.

Like I have stated several times in the past, 8 or 9 team districts is the way to go, to take the place of these ridiculous 4-5 team districts.That would only leave 2 or 3 pre district games to schedule, solving a major headache for some schools. Then, take 4 teams to the playoffs and you’ll still have the same number of playoff games.
I'd agree if there were only one division, but as long as there are two divisions, the districts need to be smaller, for travel purposes. Look at the distances some of these schools have to travel already. Adding four more schools to each district would make it a lot worse.

They have to travel for the non-district games just like they would for district games. Very little difference. Ease of scheduling is the advantage.
The difference is they could play against schools that aren't in their division, or private schools, that are a lot closer. I'll take Northside, just as an example, even though they don't seem to mind the travel. The closest team in their district, right now, is 70+ miles away. The furthest one is 120+ miles away. How much further would they have to drive to find another four opponents?
There are five schools I can think of off the top of my head that are all within 70 miles of Northside, that Northside could play against, but none of them are in Northside's division.
Again, I'm just using them as an example because I'm familiar with them geographically. There are other schools that travel much further than Northside for district games, even though there are probably schools a lot closer that they play in non-district games.
As for the ease of scheduling, though, sure, this would help a lot with that. It'd also make my life a lot easier, too, because it's less likely that schedules get shuffled around as much throughout the season. I'm just not so sure I like it from a travel standpoint.

Interesting about travel. A number of years ago (maybe 20), I was asked to appear before the school board for the Tilden McMullen ISD. Some parents wanted to bring 6 man to that school; at the time, Prairie Lea was the closest UIL school. The AD and from what I could tell, the Sup and the Board weren't in favor of it (the AD was a basketball guy). They had great facilities that could have been easily re-purposed for football with a track stadium ... at the time, the district was awash in Eagle Ford oil money. I remember one of the proponents told me later that the board told him that it would cost $1 million to start the program. I told him get me a contract for $950,000 and we'd split the profit. Anyway ....
One of the things the proponents pointed out that was the travel for the football team (5 games per season. 6 if you count a scrimmage) would be LESS than their basketball and volleyball teams then made, not only in total miles but the longest trips would be shorter with football than either of the longest trips for the other two sports. Plus, they'd have no problem filling non-district games against private schools in the San Antonio or Corpus Christi area. And since then, there are now UIL six-man programs in Pawnee and Runge as well as a private six-man team in Laredo.

Well, I'm not that active in the 6 man world anymore, and in any situation, it takes the local parents etc. to start the call. But if they now have a new AD that might be open to the game, that's great news!
