Small 2A Watch 2025

They will have 9th grade next year.
But only looking at 3 boys in that class.
It was my understanding that Morgan Mill would only open a high school if their 2024 bond passed, but it was rejected by the voters. Are you sure they're still moving forward with expansion?

Speaking of small schools, Greg Powers of DCTF, wrote/put together a list of small schools and small schools playing football.

These ones caught my eye

San Vicente 3 👀
Valentine 9 👀
Marathon 17 🙌 break out the football jerseys

How do these schools stay open?

Those small schools are the only education options available in those sparse districts other than homeschooling.

Marathon the past three years has had about 9 girls and 3 boys in HS. Their Volleyball team were district champions last year and lost to power house Water Valley in the second round. Their have upset teams in the first round of basketball playoffs two years in a row. They finished 3rd in their district behind Rankin and Buena Vista when both those schools quadruple their enrollment. They also had I believe 7 athletes boys & Girls combined go to the Regional Track meet and 1 Boy made it to state in the 800. I think once they get their numbers caught back up, probably not likely but hoping for them, I think they'd be fine athlete wise.

They have a football stadium already. Just need to replant grass since the haven't played since 2015-16.

Valentine is probably gonna consolidate with Marfa or Van Horn in a decade.

Marathon could be a town that would have more growth if they made it look not so run down, but it does look like a ghost town. Valentine absolutely needs to consolidate imo. Talk about nothing out there...

Also an intriguing school would be Terlingua. Im not sure if there enrollment went up, but having (i believe) 37 kids in HS seems like they could play. Plus its Big Bend, so awesome scenery! Doubt it happens though unless enrollment grows to the 50's. But that is wishful thinking on my part lol

Sad that the appearance of a community can negatively affect some people looking for a new hometown but it is definitely a factor. I remember what downtown Tolar looked like back in the 1960's. Looked like it was bombed during WWII. Lol. Fortunately, the locals have cleaned it up a little since then and a few businesses now operate out of what was empty store fronts. Tolar is a thriving community now.

Don't get me wrong, I actually thought it was a neat little town. But yes there was a lot of run down buildings and homes. There were also some nice and cool little buildings. I think a hotel, but I'm not familiar with Marathon. Just a quick drive by and saw what I saw.

It's too bad.Marathon is more of a tourist town than a community town. Most of the businesses I believe are owned by big corporations.

There was a story about Valentine in the San Angelo paper several years ago. It was stated that Valentine still has a school because of the travel distance to another school. Those kids would be traveling 40 - 50 miles one way to go to school and it was felt that was too much of a hardship for them.
