Best in the West

Makes sense, but what is the cut off for 5A vs 1A? I guess I would be what you consider "old school" Sixman football fan so that's where my "opinion" comes in. I know nothing of highschool 11 man ball. Ive only been around Sixman my whole life and the same thing is said for my kids.

grew up on the otherside but really enjoy 6 man ball i would like to make an all star team out of the southwest region and compete with any crowded field school through 3a maybe even 4a.. some really good kids out there... proud of there effort!!!!

One of those slacker East teams will be in the finals. And amazingly, only one of the all mighty west teams will be there too. And whether it be Oakwood, Abbott, Gordon, Zephyr or someone else, its not gonna be a cakewalk for whichever "super" team the west sends. Its not as if your #2 west team beat our #3 east team by 50, it was a 4 point difference. Any one of the east's top 4 can beat any one of the west's top 4, and vice versa. And when we get there, I doubt we will care what your rank is! We'll be coming to win!

Point being that the West is overloaded VS the East, I don't think there is much arguing that , no disrespect to the East-17 of the Top 20 in Div 1 are from the West as of now. I don't think it's an issue of who could beat who because that will be decided on the field in Dec, until then it's just opinions.

That would never work. Totally different styles of football. Summer passing league is about as close as one can get to finding common ground between 11-man and 6-man. Valley made it to the state 7-on-7 finals in '11 playing against all sizes of 11-man schools. But 300 pound linemen really don't come into play in a no-rush passing league.

What is the cut-off between 1A and 2A? In 6-man you can be playing against a school that is almost 5 times bigger than your school. The dividing point between DI and DII is not so much about the schools hovering around the 50 student mark as it is about those schools with 25-40 kids in school.

Which broaches a little different subject: track. I think it's a great thing that the UIL is finally giving 6-man it's own track division. 6-man schools rarely get past Regionals since they are thrown in with 1A and 2A schools. Sure, there is always the odd athlete who can sprint, or throw on par with the bigger guys, but you rarely, if ever, see a 6-man school in Austin fighting for a team championship.

I gotta get some decaf. Crap.

as far as the east against the west we have seen it at times where the east was loaded and these same discussions went on then, but we didnt always have a media like this to challenge, tease, and herass each other.. im glad it is here i have learned alot about other programs and how proud people are of the " sixman nation ". i did not want us to go to sixman because of the unknown and because it doesnt fit my son as well but that is what we play in our home town so i told him,if he wanted to play he was going to have to work harder. he is one of the 6'2" 290lb lineman that are out here too but dont play as much sometimes, he plays offense and a little defense.
on to track and powerlifting ... im really glad that the sixman schools will have their chance to compete against each other instead of the the larger schools being add into te mix.
powerlifting they dont even recognize sixman schools our division(3) is 1a - 2a, division (2) 3a, division (1) 4a-5a

Powerlifting is like the red-headed stepchild of highschool sports. It's not sanctioned by the UIL. THSPA is the governing body - and I kinda like it like that.

Honestly, in the lighter classes - I think 6-man schools actually have an advantage over the bigger schools. I think PL should be a requirement - if you have a competent coach. It's the single greatest sport for the purpose of building self-confidence and having a feeling of accomplishment.

Iron Rules, baby !!

my boy has competed in the 275 and the super and most of the kids in his range are larger schools. we just got involved in the last 2 years. i enjoy the meets. seems like most of the boys i see lifting from the small schools are from working familys. and oh yea by the way like you said we got a coach that was intrested and had the knowledge or we would not of ever had a program. and as far as the uil i have not seen them give a damn about any rural schools or their activities

Saw this girl at a meet a couple of years ago - from Seagraves, competing in the girls 128lb class. She got three greens squating 425. No typo. Four hundred-twenty-five pounds.

I have a pic, but no clue how to load it.

it is amazing for girls as well my daughter lifted at one meet she was sr when the school started it was watching her younger brother and wanted to try as well.. you know all activities end up being family outings, being a single dad we pulled even more togather. ha ha ha she is out of school in nursing school now has already texted me 3 times about the game and seeing her baby brother play tonight... its times like these i feel it was best to raise them in a small community!

Well we had some great games last week with lots of changes happening. Throck fell to DC and Rankin fell to BC. Both Throck and Rankin will come back this week with a vengence trust me. There are some great games this week as well- Valley / Crowell- wow, I can't wait to see how this game unfolds, this one will be very interesting.
Rankin / Meadow- Rankin the underdog by 20- wow again, I just don't see that occurring. Rankin wins
Ira / GC- they always play tough, I think GC has improved this season already- this will be a good game.
WV / ACHS- well, I can say this.... I see WV with a big win
SC / RL- this one I can't decide on... If SC is healthy it will be a good game but if they are not 100% then I see RL winning big.

Great games this week and Friday needs to hurry up!!! That was just a few big games from the West that deserve discussion, please feel free to add in some games or give your thoughts...
