Best and Worst of Former Fields

I am curious to know what former schools or old stadiums had the best and worst fields...

Ive watched many games on film of Samnorwood and it looked like they had a good field which got me wondering about the topic

Star’s field was a bit cramped but otherwise had a nice atmosphere, Novice had a nice field but its play by play guy was insanely annoying. I still believe to this day that we 45 them at the half just so we could stop hearing him.

That Star field had rocks, grassburs, and goatheads.

I really liked Blanket, May, and Zephyr’s old stadium. They all had unique character and great feilds.
Unfortunately the uniqueness of our field is what doomed it, too much runoff from the school and any rain would turn the home side into a bog and a muddy mess on the sideline and the bleacher area, in fact there was a perpetual puddle right in front of the home side where the cheerleaders stood.
Now it was reused a while back when the school had that debacle with the turf company and had to tear up the turf from the new field and a couple of school officials worked their butts off the get it game ready and afterwards there was talk of using it for homecoming games but nothing came of it.

The two worst fields that I remember were Mozelle and Star. Mozelle had a ten yard wide strip of dirt down the middle of the field, with the rest of the field having cut off weeds with a scattering of rocks. 1967 was a dry year and may have had a lot to do with the field conditions.
Star had a black land field base. When dry it was hard as a rock, it did not have a thick grass turf. When wet, you tended to carry a pound of mud around on each foot. The field was situated at the bottom of a slight rise, it caught any and all of the runoff from the school and rodeo arena.

Carbon had strategic armadillo holes or hog wallows in their sandy field. You had to anticipate the changes in elevation to avoid a twisted ankle or knee. Meridian, where we played a bi-district game in 1969 in the rain, had a couple mud holes too. Ground keepers were challenged or missing in action.

I will really agree with you on the Mozelle field, I was hauled off in a ambulance so the memories are not so great.

Samnorwoods field can look deceiving on film. Lots of holes and the famous sticker patches everywhere lol. Regardless, I still enjoyed playing there.

Worst field I played on was Fort Elliots. I believe it was just made out of an old baseball field. Mostly dirt and this is for the entire season. No offense to Fort Elliot.

FE and Samnorwood were very similar. Sticker patches, thorns, fire & red ants. FE definitely had a way better basketball gym. Samnowoods bball gym was... small, extremely small...
