6man football states?

Idaho can now be added to the list of 6-man states. They have organized a league of 4-5 teams and will be playing a probationary schedule in 2013. Dubois (Clark County), Leadore, Fairfield (Camas), Valley Christian (Gooding), and one more that I can't remember.

It sounds like they have alot of additional interest from other small town schools as well as a number of charter schools as well.

ok, i guess i had seen where old bearkat had written something over there. I was looking thru the extinct teams and noticed several that werent on there that used to play in our county and thought someone might add them. Also Savoy used to play sixman and had even won dist. in 1942 i think and none of those seasons were on there. Just thought it might be more interesting history to add to their site.

Doggone right! I've been looking for scores from that part of the state for several years. Send 'em on.

If you have access to verifiable records you can send in, e-mail them to [email protected] and the history pages can be updated.

I found a few scores for Southmayd when they were a 6/8 man school. I think they played one season of 11 man before consolidation with Sadler.

Just about every state had a team that played six-man football at some point...usually all in the 1930s-50s time frame...I have team photos of many!!! Some from high schools around the Mojave desert in California, Virginia stopped in the late 50s as did most Eastern states...thsi si from Epler's book published in 1938:

High Schools playing 6man football in 1937, information furnished by director of physical education department for the state, includes only ones that sent in reports (in other words some other states may have also had team playing but didn't report it to Epler...like Texas)

28 States reported schools playing six-man football:

Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming

Then in 1939 at least all these states had teams playing six-man, because they had all american players and top 6man teams published in American Boy magazine:

38 schools listed with a team or player in the honors:

Texas
Florida
Washington
Colorado
Wyoming
Michigan
Maine
Mississippi
Missouri
New Hampshire
Oklahoma
Georgia
Iowa
Ohio
Wisconsin
Idaho
Montana
New York
Oregon
Arkansas
Connecticut
Louisiana
Minnesota
Alabama
Nebraska
Tennessee
Vermont
California
Illinois
North Dakota
South Dakota
Nevada
New Jersey
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
West Virginia
New Mexico
Arizona

Sitting down right now and just looking at 2 sources of mine...those 2 I posted about...and knowing what I have researched already...the only 4 States I am not sure if they ever fielded a 6man team are: Alaska, Hawaii, Rhode Island, Utah...and I am willing to bet Hawaii is the only one that has never had a 6man team ever.

Does anyone know all of the states that play six man? I think it's TEXAS, New Mexico, Montana, Colorado, Nebraska, Florida, Louisiana, and Maryland. If there's is anymore I would really like to know.
I played six man football in central Illinois in 1955 and 1956, the school played the game years before me. We switched to 11 man in 1957.

Illinoisy has done so much school consolidation that there are not very many rural schools small enough to play 6 man. I checked a few years ago and I counted maybe 15-20 schools that would qualify to play it.

Late to this topic but I looked into this historically and I believe at some point every state except Hawaii played 6man football. It was the fastest growing sport at one time in America before WW2.

Note: I just realized I am not late to this topic since I was posting on it back in 2012 LOL...just realized someone reposted on it and I used an old account (Knowmystuff) LOL

The first six-man game played in Texas was on September 29, 1936 between Sylvester High School and Dowell High School at the high school football field in Rotan, TX. Sylvester won the game 14-0. In 1938, Prairie Lea High took on Martindale High School in a six-man football game played as a demonstration game to see if the Texas UIL would adopt it as a sanctioned sport, which they did, and by spring of that year about 55 schools were playing the game. This number had doubled by 1939 and at one point in the 1960s there were more than 160 six-man teams in Texas. On October 5, 1940, Windham High School from Windham, Ohio defeated Stamford Collegiate of Niagara Falls, Ontario, 39-1 in the first international six-man football game.[1]https://americanfootballdatabase.fandom.com/wiki/Six-man_football#cite_note-1 Jack Pardee, who played in the 1950s at Christoval High School in Texas is a 6-man player who played and coached in the NFL. Chicago Bear Ed Sprinkle, who played six-man football at Tuscola High School in 1939, is another former Texas High School 6-man player who played in the NFL.

More than 70 years later, in addition to its stronghold in Texas, six-man football is played by 12 schools in Nebraska, 28 in Montana, 21 in Colorado, 10 in Wyoming and nine in New
