Up and Coming in '09

To help alleviate some of the quiet here, I'd like to hear opinions on rising teams for the upcoming season. I'll start:

Arlington Fellowship- Coach Harris is on the road to building another program. Those boys will be fired up and ready. What do they have returning? Will they get some move-ins?

Brownwood Victory- Another school to keep an eye on. A coach building a program from nothing. Perhaps a good measuring stick will be when Fellowship and Brownwood face-off in district play.

Bellville Faith- Will they continue the Cinderella season from last year?

S.A. Town East- Will they have enough to challenge Freddy this year?

Discuss........

So, will Seguin Lifegate have enough to take down Freddy? Can we count on a race in that district? What about the new S.A. Believers?

Arlington Fellowship- they should be fantastic! I know they only lose one player even though that one was all state!
hopefully they will do things the right way.
with some help from some great coaches, I got that program started and now they are ready to explode!

The smart bettors still put their dough on Freddy to win the district (remember, they've only lost one district game in five years ... that to SA Town East in 06, when Heritage, Lifegate and Town East split their series and the district crown). I'd score the district this way today ... but it is a long time to October.

Heritage
Town East
Lifegate
Believers

This topic has died down the last few weeks....
What do ya'll think about the Wichita Schools, Christian and Notre Dame? how do they look?
Like I said earlier Fellowship is loaded. Being the A.D. the last 3 years, I know they have the talent. I just hope they do things the right way. I love those kids and look forward to hearing good things from them.

This year it seems alot of teams in Div II are (loaded). I see where Bellville, Brenham, Tyler Street, Arlington Fellowship, Seguin Lifegate, Christway and Town East are all returning most if not all of their starters from last year. Lets not forget about Freddy, they are always (loaded). I dont know too much about the panhandle/west Texas teams maybe someone can fill us in about them. And one last thing, There is a new coach down in Alvin that will probably take Livingstones to a new level. This should be the most competitive year in football top to bottom that I have been apart of. I believe as many as five schools have legitimate shots at the state title game. It all comes down to the playoff pairings later in the fall.

If Town East is fortunate enough to make it to the playoffs this year they should be battle tested, they scrimmage at Brenham and Marble Falls then they play Bellville, Christway, Freddy (all final four teams from last year) they also play CASA, Winston, Lifegate, Annapolis, Prairie Lea. All of these teams are returning most of their starters from last year. I look forward to season and the promise that it brings. Hope everybody is enhoying their summer break.

That sure is a heck of a schedule Town East has put together. Will they have any steam left when it's time to face Freddy?

I believe there are three things that will seperate the top 4 or 5 (maybe just two) from the rest this year:
1. Injuries-
2. Strength of schedule-
3. Luck-

We all know how injuries can influence a team, especially six-man. Early injuries can be overcome. Late to mid-season injuries can desimate a team. Strength of schedule has a HUGE impact come playoff time. Those teams that play a challenging schedule are much more prepared in November/December. Keep your eyes on those teams that may have a loss or two against DI or UIL teams. Luck, well, even the best teams need a bit of luck once in a while.

I was going to include playoff brackets as my #4. But, as far as I know, the brackets are the same as last year. The only thing that will change is how teams are seeded, who wins district, runner up, etc.

Pup,
TAPPS has the best teams in the private school system, DI and DII, and that makes it a hard hitting season awaiting us all this year.

Freddy is the king, no question. Until someone proves that wrong and we in the DII ranks seem to have a hard time doing that. As far as the others:

-Town East will always be in the running as they have a great program with a great coach.
-Brenham will be a monster and have the best chance to knock off the Giant from German town.
-Christway is the natural favorite to be back in December, however, we just don't know what losing a great coach and athletic director will do for their program? We will have to see if they can come together.
-Tyler Street is going to be a beast this year as everyone comes back, they have a great coaching staff, and they are experienced. They are a true threat.
-Fellowship, well we are young. I have a great coaching staff and a Godly bunch of men to help mentor our boys. They are truly a Godsend to the program and to these young men. Jesus, discipline, and heart are the themes for this year. We have numbers but that doesn't always tell the story. We have a lot of work to do and will have to work hard to play with the big boys this year.
-Other schools that could make a run for different reasons such as coaching, talent, or experience would be Bellville, Wichita Notre Dame, Living Stone, and Seguin. They all have a legitimate shot to face D-II's green monster. Sorry if I've left any out as there are always sleepers out there that pop up out of a great program that we've not had on our radar.

Should be an exciting year. Put Him first and as TAPPS stated at their annual meeting this year, Let's Compete with Honor.

Good luck guys and God bless your teams,
Coach Harris

Kevin ... I told you last week I got your back on that ... see you next Friday here in Seguin!

Yes, it should be a fun year! I haven't seen the Christway kids yet but I know they have talent. I can't wait for football season, it is like the appetizer for basketball. (ok, not really)

Fellowship- looking forward to seeing them grow even more into the champions they are!
Notre Dame- should be an interesting year, after a full year of learning.
Fredericksburg-champions til otherwise!
Victory Life- talented.
South schools- don't know too much about.

makes for a fun season.

Cant forget about Brownwood Victory Life they are LOADED with talent I mean they have guys from Brownwood High School coming over who are TOP athletes! Dont be suprised if Brownwood Victory Life wins District 3 this year!!! :-)

I've noticed Coach Ware has been keeping very quiet. He must have something special brewing at alvin living stones. My guess is Keenon is coming there but he won't show that hand until football starts.
I read on another thread that alvin living stones was participating in the Lifegate Passing Tournament, well my friends, don't be suprised if the Ward kid ain't there.....

I'm tossing out Alvin Living Stones as my up & coming team in '09..........

Coach Ware and Alvin Living Stones were there; his nephew is spending the summer with his parents.

As for results, well, all I know is that Lifegate went 2-2. I only made the last hour or so.

Other teams participating (from memory): SA Town East, Fredericksburg Heritage, Round Rock Christian, SA FEAST, and one other which I can't remember.

I hate to be the goat in the sheep's pen, but I have a question (not intended to accuse, only to gather information).

If Keenon follows Caoch Ware to Alvin Living Stones simply because Coach Ware has moved, isn't that a violation of TAPPS transfer rules? If Coach Ware is Keenon's legal, permanent guardian - as determined by the courts - then the transfer is legit. But if Keenon is just staying with Coach Ware for other reasons, then I think the TAPPS rules should be looked at.

I think remember a Coach Barber - may not have the name right - and several players who were suspended - or disciplined in some similar way - for this type of action/transfer a few years back at a TAPPS 4-A school.

David ... I actually did ask Coach Ware that question several months ago. At the time of my question (and I have no information to tell me if the situation has changed), he was the legal guardian of his nephew and therefore he could transfer and play for him at a new school. I wouldn't be betting any grocery money either way on the young man playing for Coach Ware this fall.

The rule you mention was added several years ago because of the transfer of several players as their coach moved to a new school and prohibits a student who transfers from one TAPPS school to another TAPPS school in order to play for a coach from their old school; the student cannot compete on a team coached by that coach for one calendar year. I think it involved Coach Barber and Arlington Grace Prep ... for some reason, our DFW brethern are pretty good at pushing the envelope; must be something in the water. If I remember one story at the time, a young man appeared at the school to apply to attend and was told that "a Christian gift had been made in his name" to cover the cost of his education at the school. Oh, and he played football. Suprise, suprise. But I could be wrong.

I do not believe that the rule applies if the coach came from a non-TAPPS member school, but don't quote me on this. I know TAPPS takes a very stern attitude about "inducement," that is, encouraging enrollment for athletic purposes and has a special place in TAPPS h-e-double-hockey-sticks for something called "tampering," which would encourage moving from one TAPPS school to another. Those less gracious than I would call this the "Honor among thieves rule."

There are two exceptions to the coach/transfer rule: (1) if the coach is the parent or legal guardian of the student and (2) if the previous school closed.

Speaking of eligibility rules, I believe TAPPS is changing the transfer rules this year. In the past, the rules were 15 days after enrollment AND a deadline for district/state competition (fall, winter and spring). I haven't seen the rule, but I was told that now, you must be enrolled at your school for 15 days prior to that deadline date. No late transfers (even though they would only be eligible for nondistrict play) are going to be allowed. When I see it in writing, I'll post it.
