Undefeated and No Championship

Both BC and Goree were loaded that year. Both teams had over 25 players and had second strings that could beat most starting squads. Hell, either one could probably have given a strong run at the 11 man Class B state championship, if not taken it.

Abilene was 11-0-1...tied Highland Park 20 to 20 in semifinal but didn't go through because of tie breaker...

Abilene had won three previous championships prior to this 57'season...during that time had only one loss in those 4 years...

Sherman 1976 (10-0-2) and 1977 (9-0-1)
This is from lonestarfootball.net '76 Sherman/Temple game.
"Very painful game for long-suffering Bearcat fans, who hadn't enjoyed the playoffs since 1962. After being ranked #1 all season, Sherman let Temple score 2 TDs in final minutes and advance on penetrations, where they ultimately lost to SA Churchill in state championship game. The following season, Plano tied Sherman in district play and advanced to the playoff based on first downs, ultimately beating PN-G in state finals before what was at the time largest crowd in state championship game history. Again, Bearcats had been ranked #1 most of the season. This was before multiple teams advanced. Bearcats are the only team in modern history to go undefeated two straight seasons and yet not win a state title."

In 1981 Port Arthur Jefferson was ranked #1 and undefeated. Aldine tied them 21-21 in bi-district and advanced on penetrations.
The previous year Jeff was undefeated and killed us (Aldine) in bi-district 49-6. They lost in the finals to Permian 28-19.
What was so exciting about the '81 game, it was tied in penetrations and Jeff was ahead in first downs and Aldine had the ball with seconds left on about Permian's 21. Aldine penetrated by inches and advanced.

I remember those Abilene teams from the 50's. They were great.
