The Elite

I guess I would be remiss not to mention Billy Jones who preceeded Roddy Maddox at Cherokee. His time at Cherokee is often forgotten but many say he laid the groundwork for those great Cherokee Teams..................I remember when he passed away, I believe he was working the grain harvest during the off season and had a heart attack...... The rest as they say is history. Roddy was his assistant.

Gus Dormier should be listed in there somewhere. Was successful in Goree and then took a fledgling Throckmorton 11 man team to State his first year in Throck. Helped convert to real footbal and built a mighty successful program there.

As far as I know, he was also the only coach to take teams into the playoffs in 6, 8 and 11 man.

"Who would you pick if you had to pick coaches for your sons team?"

Vance Jones the best man / coach that I have ever had the opportunity to sit in the stands an listen to him coach both teams while enjoying the game. I had the privilege to be on a search committee and he was not chosen. the passion that he speaks about his past current and future players. his desire to help other coaches.

I was glad that my son was able to play under Shannon Williams. prior to Williams all the games and coaching I had seen up to that was built on speed. I saw taking strong blocking team run in a tight formation made the oppositions defense have to come up and take on strength and aggressive play.

in closing I think that coaches get to much credit and blame in the wins and losses.

Yes Sir. I had the honor of playing for and learning from the Man on the '86-'90 Throckmorton teams. I may be a lil biased, but had I not played for him and still knew of his accomplishments, I'd still put him in my list of "The Elite".
