The Elite

I know he hasn't been around forever, but this coach has done more with less than any other coach out there. He has yet to be picked to win district since he's been here and yet two years in a row he's run away with it. He throws tons of points on the board and does things the right way. If it were my son, I would want Coach Satcher from Buckholts as my kids OC or HC.

I'm going with Hall of Fame coach Danny Medina of Fort Hancock as HC....5 state titles from 1996-92...career record 109-8...

What about Harvey Wellman, one of the most respected coaches in 6man history and to do what he did at Guthrie, where they are always low on kids is quit an accomplishment. One of the best offensive minded coaches.

That is the mark of a great coach..to motivate and teach average talented teams to play well...if you don't have the speed and size...then fundamentals of blocking, tackling, reading the plays become even more important, and knowwing what the other team is likely to do in a given situation.

Honored to be mentioned in same topic as these people and smokey and jc threw out part of my post. There are some guys who most of you never heard of that were among the greatest to ever be on the field. Harvey Wellman, Roddy Maddox, Graham Hart, Jerry Miller, Grant Tidwell, and many many more. One of the greatest and a true gentleman and coach is Sam Adams. These guys made the game of sixman great as it is today. There are others I am sure I am forgetting, but add them to your mix of Medina, Burkhart, and others and the result is what we have today.

Rainjack, am too old to whip any one's butt, but you know what they say about old men and butt whippings.

All coaches deserve praise for molding our young men, but I'm partial to the old coaches like Shely, Wellman, Adams, Miller, and Maddox, to name a few. They were the true Bum Phillips of six man during their time. I bet their kids, that are adults now, would still go to war for them.

Come on HighPlains Drifter, you say you ain't as good as you once was, but I have faith you could be as good once as you ever was. Now, do you feel pumped up?

Doc: not sure what it is you are saying, but was referring to old men being to old to take ass whippings so they will shoot your ass. Just saying. Ha

While he only coached six man 4 or 5 years (?) Coach Underwood won the 1st State Championship, had a 40-3 record, "developed the 1st true triple option - the Obrien veer", and wrote the book that influenced so many new to the game.

I have had the pleasure to know some of the men listed here and was lucky enough to get some of them to give me advice when I first started coaching. I will always be thankful to them. One thing needs to be said about those great coaches, when they started talking football, you paid attention and it was great to be able to grab the napkin they were drawing on. I still have all the napkins I was lucky enough to get. Not only are all these guys great coaches, but they are great men and I take great pride in calling them friends. I did not have the pleasure of meeting or knowing all the great coaches listed here, my loss.

Agreed, from what I've seen and heard, he takes things way beyond the field and teaches the kids what they need to know about life, responsibility, and accountability.

I appreciate the vote of confidence, but I still have tons to learn. Most of these guys mentioned were doing this long before I saw my first 80 yard field. It's nice to be mentioned though, but I give tons of respect to those guys in Jonesboro who year after year, put out quality teams, no matter their roster.

Thanks again. While I love the wins, most play their last game of football in high school. I've had more students come back after ten years and thank me for their life lessons, than the ones who remembered district championships. Thanks again for your kind words.

Every Coach deserves a shout out. Through my son I know all of you have one of the hardest jobs to do. Your not only a Coach, your a teacher, councilor, a motivator, a bus driver, a mentor and I could go on and on and on. I appreciate all 6-man Coaches and what they do for the boys.

Although Granger isn't Coaching which I believe he should, I think we all need to give him a shout out for what he does for this message board, also the other guys that help. Hey guys your fantastic.

Gus Dormier should be listed in there somewhere. Was successful in Goree and then took a fledgling Throckmorton 11 man team to State his first year in Throck. Helped convert to real footbal and built a mighty successful program there.
