So here is a question...

Leman Saunders

Six-man expert
When someone says "It's a 1A state record" does that refer to when they made six-man size schools their own classification in track a few years ago...or in the history of class 1A which would go a lot farther back when six-man and what is now 2A were all class 1A?

and then there is the time we had class B...please I need a UIL track and field classification lecture someone!

I believe 2013 is the year the current 1A records began.

so presumably them (if they haven't been broken) records set by a six-man school athlete prior to then would be 2A records now?

Example Albert Booker's records he set from Trent believe at the time he set 100m 200m and 400m (47.49) records.

Booker has the 2A record in the 400m. Stanley Kerr from Snook has the 2A 100m & 200m records. The Elkins girl from Gordon (2009) has the 2A 100m Hurdles record.

the kid from Snook ran a 10.34 100m & a 20.64 200m

this is a TOTAL guess, but it is possible that any pre-2013 1A records were compared with 2A records & the best one of the two became the 2A record. for instance, Ryder Peacock has the HJ record at 7' 0.25" (2002) for 2A

again - a pure guess on my part here

You are correct, Coach Shelton.

Old Class A records are now 2A records (and, if any still exist, those were the Class B records before that).

What I am wondering is......does anyone have the records from when sixman used to have their own state meet back in the 80's and early 90's (I believe they held it in Comanche on the weekend between Regional and State). I would think those records could have some merit in this discussion.

Jones26,

that wasnt a state meet, just a six-man only invitational meet (I think I do have some times from those somewhere). They still competed at the state meet with all other 1A schools at the time.

But if Im wrong HPD will correct me on this

So can Albert Booker (and others) claim to be the 1A and 2A record holder for the 400 then (assuming his times better than the current 1A record) because he set it in class 1A?????

That's the devil's advocate in me...sorry

The sixman state meets were as Leman described. The first meet was at Comanche. Sixman was the first bunch to bring 4 entries to state meet. There were prelims and all. The big A school complained we had two state meets (though they could have done the same thing) and we had two individuals who pretty much ruined it for all. But that is another story. I would have no idea about times for those meets.

In every classification but 1A all the records were moved up. So all records in 1A since 2013 are new. I believe this is how they do it at the regional meets. All except the Region 1 meet, which for some reason still carries the old 1A (new 2A) records.

Albert Booker sacrificed his 1A record to become the 2A 400m record holder, that we all may enjoy the benefits of competing in a classification with schools our size - and I for one am thankful for that!

In my opinion, those records need to move up with the renaming the divisions. Being the devil's advocate myself, who is to say the current 1A 400m runner wouldn't have broken Booker's record if he ran against the other 2A schools? It's a safe bet he wouldn't have, but each division needs their own record. Booker still has his name in the record books, and deservedly so.

The only person I could think of that would come close to Booker is Ryan Adkins (Highland '03-'06). I know he for sure had some sub 10.5 times, but not sure if they were at invitationals, or at the state meet. Also pretty sure his quarter was pretty close to that 47 ran by Booker. Lol, just throwin' some fuel on Leman's fire.....

not sure where I stand on it...I guess sitting on the fence...as it really doesnt matter

If someone wanted to argue records like Ryder's and Booker's should stay in 1A I could see their reasoning. Also see how they should be counted as the new 2A

But I think in the eyes of most of us who competed before 2013...those record setters before with still better times and distances are still the 1a record holders in our minds...it's hard to think other wise

I don't understand why they are doing this either, but then I remember...it's South Plains, and they probably don't even know that the old 1A is now called 2A.

Back when we were Division II 1A South Plains allowed us to have our own records, then when Division I moved up they went back to the old 1A records, not the Division II records. SMH
