School Closings

I have been wondering when the TEA would get around to going after the small schools close to bigger towns. LaMarque is a surprise though.

If "Winning in the classroom..." was really a tradition why were they on academic probation for years of low scores?

As a parent, I wish our school would keep the kids working all class peroid, assign homework, do book reports, and continue the AR prog. into HS.

I made a few phone calls to some people from Jonesboro and not a single one knew or had any clue what I was talking about when I asked them about their school closing.

As the previous coach at Brookesmith, (3 years ago) I had the same response. Most of the people have no idea. Not sure if that means anything or not.

Having your ADA drop below 90 for two years in a row will get your small school in money trouble faster than anything. Were the schools listed on the list strictly for their test scores?

Most likely if Jonesboro closes the kids will go Gatesville or Hamilton. The boys that want to play sixman will find rides to Oglesby.

This sucks!!!! another school heavy on tradition being out on the limb.
Yes, it does. Unfortunately our small schools don't fit in the "cookie-cutter" mold that TEA desires. ..............

Sounds alot like NOVICE. What a sad story

I still believe Jonesboro and Brookesmith will be open in 2015-16 school year.

As for La Marque, I've heard from family members in the Clear lake area say it's been all over the news daily and a date is set (July 1) for the school to close.
TEA has revoked La Marques accreditation.

Obviously, you never want any school to close down because of the effects it can have on the students and the teachers, staff, etc who have lost their jobs. I feel more for the small town schools who could lose their school because it affects so many more. In a lot of cases these towns identities are tied into their schools. It's all very sad.

From what I understand and I could very well be wrong, but the TEA ordering a district or school to close is merely a formality. The school/schools being told to close will have numerous opportunities to get things turned around and fixed. A few years back Premont, TX was ordered to close their school district by July 1st, they cut their sports programs, poured money into tutoring and academics and are still open today.
