What it DOES is make sure we have a lot of 45'd and out games the first week. Putting a #1 against a #4 almost always results in 2 quarters of play in sixman, especially DIV-II.
I don't have the stats in front of me, but last year I continued the mercy rule scorecard throughout the playoffs. I think something like 49.3% of all regular season games ended by the 45 point rule; with playoffs, it was 49.0%, so close to half of all playoff games ended by that rule.
My guess is that more of those games were in the early rounds, but if memory serves me well, at least one TAPPS championship game ended by the 45 rule, and I know at least one TAPPS semi-final game also ended by that rule ... and the UIL D1 title game was a 44 point win for Richland Springs, nearly making the count.
Just found the numbers: 2007 playoffs ... all playoff games 46.2% (does not include first round TCAF games, which were counted with Week 10 results).
Public schools 22/46 games, 47.8% including two of the four semifinals that ended in 45-games.
Private schools: TAPPS playoffs 13/26, or 50%, including one final (D1) and one semifinal (D2); TCAF playoffs 4/10, or 40% only 1 semifinal ended in a 45 game, but 3 of the 4 first round games played in week 10 ended by 45 (the fourth was a forfeit).
