I like the air horns.
But I agree that they should be regulated. Used for exclamation on a TD, running through the sign or tunnel, not for every tackle, not during timeouts, not during the coaches huddle after a TD, not during a kickoff, not during a band performing (for the few schools that have a band).
Same goes for big rolling barrels full of rocks. Big sideline sound systems, etc.
Noisemakers are a part of the game, but the EXTREME noisemakers should be limited.

We had an air horn built this year. Nothing to the magnitude of several of the teams we have faced, but had one anyway. At one stadium, we were read and given a copy of the following:
Per NCAA Rulebook -
Artificial Noisemakers (thunder sticks, cow bells, air horns) shall not be permitted inside the contest venue, and such noisemakers, shall be removed from the playing, and spectator area immediately.
Needless to say, we no longer carry our horn, and we hear them all the time. Funny, this year I have been called out on balloons, air horns and footballs. Guess we're not at the level yet to get the benefit of the doubt. Was told I would receive the death penalty if I broke a "serious" UIL rule. LOL

Coach, they did the same thing at Shotwell, so everyone just moves it up by the score board. The rules are ambiguous and therefore often are ignored. Just use the stuff and don't worry about it. They are mostly there as CYA for the stadium authorities. If a balloon or airhorn causes damage they will be covered under, "We told them not to" in writing. In 2004 they were very clear about keeping our fans off the turf after the game, and had security guards stationed at the gates to the field. So afterwards the fans jumped the fence instead. My wife asked a guard what he would do if it happened. He just smiled and said he wasn't going to arrest an old lady for wanting to get on the field to celebrate...unless she started cutting pieces of turf for souvenirs. I bet she was the first one to put up her carpet knife and jump the fence.

Until recently the UIL prohibited cheerleaders from giving treat-bags to the football players because it discriminated against the non-football players. What a crock. And pregame meals once had to be offered to the entire student body for the same reason. The only way to do it legally was to charge the players for the meal. Too much control. A UIL rep. (won't name him) told me face-to-face that the purpose of the UIL was not to make the playing field level for athletes, rather it was for the non-athletes. I said what???

Enjoy the next 16 years. Be nice to your wife (flowers occasionally) Stay in shape, watch your diet (eat lot's of oysters). 50 is an arbitrary point in time. 40 can be a turning point if your old, fat and bald.

This was in the late 1800's. They had no cable, tv, radio, electricity or running water. If you want to catch him consider camping more often.
