Old Marathon School

its over 100 miles from terlingua to Alpine, the kids use to ride the bus for over 2 1/2hrs ,they caught it about 5 AM and didnt get home till almost 6, the area people, ranchers and BigBend nat'l park got together and raised money and had fundraisers to build the school system there. I use to work on a Big ranch down that way and it is quite a drive. the wall street journal wrote an artilce that you can still find online titled "the longest bus ride in america", the reason for building the school is the people and the parents were tired of seeing such a high drop out rate amongst the kids down there, they would just quit school because of the bus ride. i hope they develop a 6 man program, there close to marathon, sanderson, imperial, granfalls, several locations out there so good luck to them and hope to see them playing 6 in the future.

I remember reading about the bus route those kids took; the bus driver would stay in Alpine for the day and run errands for the locals back in Terlingua; going to the drug store, etc., for those unable to make the trip.

Close to Marathon, Sanderson, Imperial, etc. is a relative term, I guess.

Marathon is the closest but I do not see them ever playing football again, maybe not even basketball. Seems there is or was another school system in the area, but cannot remember the name of it. Maybe Cody can tell us.

When I was out there Marathon did not run bus routes, they paid all the parents perdiam to bring the kids to school. The only bus the school had was the activity bus. Our closest football game was against Christoval and we played Whitthareal that year as well. After all the other schools moved to 6man it really shortened travel time. When drifter was out there, I THINK they were the only team in their district?

well I would hate to see the community wither away! but money and numbers dictate a lot..
2 1/2 hours for a bus ride to school would be an immense beating!

I was way gone before the Mustangs being the only team in the district, was coaching so makes me old, old. When I was in school at least last two years played every team in district twice, so had 10 district games. I am not sure whether both games counted but probably did.

Texas Christian Academy was around for almost 35 years. We had a pastor come in and close it down. it was sad to see it close and be turned into a parking lot but things work out for the best!
we ran the gammit of competing in TCAL, TAPPS and CSAF.
great memories!
